An American acquaintance of mine who collects bottles (not whisky - no accounting for taste), has asked me to find him a bottle marked "Cartwright and Bentley". Apparently he saw 2 in a museum in Edinburgh a few years ago and has lusted after them ever since. Now he thinks I can just pop down to the local antique shop and pick him up a selection (quaint, eh?) but I can't even find a reference to these names in any of my books, or online, either as distillers, bottlers or wholesalers. Can anyone throw any light on the mysterious Cartwright and Bentley? Top Malt

I believe Cartwright & Bentley, Edinburgh & London. were bottlers/exporters of spirits and wine such as Scotch whisky, vodka, gin and wine. I believe they were owned by Bercut-Vandervoort & Co.a importier in San Francisco.

Here is a example of a whisky bottled by Cartwright & Bentley and imported by Bercut-Vandervoort & Co. It was bottled for The Savoy Tivoli a cafe/bar in North Beach San Francisco which is still there today.

This bottle is currently up for aucton at Whisky Online auctions with a opening bid of £10 and no bids on it yet and 6 days to go in the auction. As your friend only likes empty bottles you will may need to drink it it for him.
