I decided to do a head-to-head tasting of these 2 excellent drams this afternoon.
The Glenlivet Guardian's Chapter Limited Edition, 48.7%abv
Neat-
Nose: The lightest of honeys shine and build; apricot jam, orange peel, floral sachets, spiced tangerines, plums and a dark fruit genre, hint of spicy red licorice, pears in heavy syrup and orange liqueur parfait.
Palate: Spice and a big fruity rush, citrus hit, smooth and creamy with loads of delectable honey.
Finish: Long, bold spice and honey tones perseverate with shades of vanilla halvah (sesame flour and honey) in particular.
Comments- This is a very pleasant yet somewhat intense but not overwhelming dram with exotic qualities. Hard to have just one dram.
Glenfiddich Cask of Dreams-Canadian Edition 48.8%abv
Neat-
Nose: Apples. jelly rolls, papaya, fruity ice wine, well-honed citrus, cognac notes, hint of menthol, mild tobacco leaf, spicy oak and late pipe tobacco.
Palate: Oh so smooth and creamy, spice, burst of cream soda, some delightful impinging mint and menthol with an oaky undertone.
Finish: A refined melange of cognac, liqueur and ice wine reminiscences.
Comments: This is a connoisseur's dram for the library in the palace or in your home on an easy chair to be savored in solitude and contemplation.
Head-to-head, Both of these expressions are bottled at almost the same %abv and show each other off rather than embarass one or the other. They both are stellar drams really. The Cask of Dreams has a little extra flair in creatively synthesizing flashes of cognacs, liqueurs and ice wines while the Guardian's Chapter taps directly into aromatic centers with the purity of the honeys (aroma, taste, texture and balance).
Drinking them consecutively is a pleasure and a privilege. _________________ "Always carry a large flagon of whisky in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake."
