Afternoon all, I was reading an article on the web earlier about the top 10 whiskies that wont break the bank.
Nothing ground breaking in it to be fair, but it got me to thinking, what are the opinions of those of us who frequent the forum, when it comes to whisky that can regularly be found under £40.
The article in referance is here...
http://www.thedrinksbusiness.com/2013/10/balblair-set-to-launch-three-new-vintages/
My top 10 in no particular order...
Laphroig QC
Glenlivet Nadurra (currently on offer at £38.50 in Tesco)
HP12
Co-op Highland malt 12yo (given its cost in the low £20's its rather good)
Talisker 10
Glendronach 15
Glenfarclas 105
OP 12
A'Bunadh (showing on The Whisky Exchange at less than £40)
Ardmore Traditional cask
I'd be very happy with that little lot!
There are loads of others, but these are the ones that I particuarly have enjoyed and that I feel represent value for money, I swithered about the A'Bunadh as it's probably a little pricey for what it is, but I do love a good A'Bunadh.
So what's your thoughts? |

Alun, an interesting thread. The problem of course is finding single malts under 40 pounds equivalent here in Ontario Canada, so under $66.00 Canadian. The selection would be very thin and much of it you probably wouldn't want to drink. Consider that even Glenmorangie The Original is over 40 pounds equivalent here. I'd say everything on your list is well over 40 pounds equivalent here.

I'd include Laphroaig Cask Strength if that were allowed (i.e. it's released in limited batches but comes in under £40) and, if not, the 10yo. I know others prefer the QC. They're all great value.
Aberlour A'Bunadh and Glenfarclas 15 would have scraped under £40 until recently. _________________ "Whisky is liquid sunshine."

Olie, the A'Bunadh 57 pounds equiv. here. _________________ "Always carry a large flagon of whisky in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake."

I distinctly remember A'Bunadh being c.£35 in the shops about three years ago, it's now c.£42. £57 is pretty painful _________________ "Whisky is liquid sunshine."

I dont really have a top 10, what i reach for depends very much on my mood but 10 regular drams of mine under £40 are:
Glenmorangie 10
Highland Park 12
Talisker 10
Aberlour a'bunadh
Glenfarclas 15
Glendronach 15
Laphproaig Quarter Cask
Caol Ila 12
Arran 10
Balvenie 12 Doublewood
Port Charlotte The Peat Project had become a regular but it is now hard to get hold of, has the new Bruichladdich owners discontinued it?
Glenfiddich 18 and Glenlivet 18 would have certainly been on this list until recently when they ramped up the prices of these 2 malts. |
