Morning all,
I was reading on twitter some of the live dramming notes from one of the many live dramming sessions that have happened of late. And it kind of got me to thinking, perhaps we should have a forum live dramming?
Just a standard easy to get hold of bottle of something that perhaps a few of us on here might have, then a wee gathering one evening to bring together the forums collective thoughts.
Who's game? |

Sounds great. How about Glenlivet 18 to start? I know a lot of us took advantage of the recent discounts on that. Laphroaig QC seems to be another common one. _________________ "Whisky is liquid sunshine."

I'm thinking it would be easier in here if we open a dedicated topic for the tasting and to be fair there are not that many of us who will take part here. Worth a try me thinks. If it's rubbish . Don't need to do so again.
I like the idea of the livet 18. |

Alun, I like the idea of a Forum tasting. Unfortunately, The Glenlivet 18 is not in my cellar and at $100. a pop for a bottle here, not an economical dram at the moment & considering all the bottles i do have in my scotch bar, it wouldn't be on my "want list' right now. Recently there have been some interesting posts about Laphroaig Quarter Cask including one by Olie. I would love to take part in a Forum tasting on this expression. Just a thought.

I'm not wedded to the livet 18 and im sure I can twist bifters arm into helping me out with a sample of the QC Fir these purposes.
So who's in? |

I do enjoy reading others tasting notes and opinions on here and i do find them a great guide but i have never really been one for sitting down and writing a colourful tasting note myself but when i have done i would take my time over it, even sitting for a few hours with a few pours of the same dram before declaring my opinion.
My thought is does it really need to be a live tasting, how about choosing a SMW forum members malt of the month and members can submit their tasting note, opinion and mark out of 100 at their leisure and the results can be assembled and posted on the site an average score added. Perhaps sticking to drams which are affordable to all |

I'm in for the Forum Live Dramming. I do understand James' point . However, a live dynamic feedback tasting experience would be quite interesting to me as well as others. I am quite used to taste notes "on the fly" and it hones one's tasting skills IMO. I really like Albo's notion. James, perhaps what you suggest can also be done as a separate undertaking.
If we do go ahead with the Live Dramming, please note those of us across the pond are of course 5 hours earlier here. If the event was held let's say on a Sunday at 2pm here which is 7pm in U.K., it sounds quite credible. Of course, Alun it's your show so you call the "shots".

These are great I really enjoy doing things like this, find it really helps develop tasting ability.
It might be worth contacting Tomatin for a samples of the new peated whisky they have coming out, you would have to limit it to people that have over x number of posts to stop the lurkers joining in for a free dram.
Just throwing another idea in, but original idea would probably work.
When i did the twitter tastings i had notes from the night before as quick fire tasting is not what i wanted to do to review a product, but doing it along with others did throw up some interesting things. _________________ Putting the func in dysfunctional. |

Problem for overseas Forum members. Sample shipping not possible. I once ordered some 1 oz samples from UK and paid an extra 60% duty making the taxes and shipping higher than what I paid for the samples. Moreover, they don't deliver to Canada so I had to drive to USA to get them. Total nightmare.

| I'm in, though not for the next couple of weeks since I'm going away. But after that, definitely! I don't have a Glenlivet 18 but I have a Laphroaig QC. |

Right, seems to me like we're getting some interest in this. Excellent!
William, do you think with your contacts you could possibly look into getting samples for the 'forum stallwarts'? Something worth looking into at least.
Anyway, as a wee trial run, Bifter and I had a chat today and thought we would give it a go.
We're going to try with a Whisky Broker Longmorn 20yo, I know very little more about it that the above and it's botteled at 55.5% abv.
It's going to break down like this...
1st up Nose the Whisky neat, then report back what we get
2nd Taste neat, again try it, think, report back
3rd Nose with water
4th Taste with water.
We were at an SMWS tasting event the other day and this seemed to work quite well, so let's give that a go and see how it all works out on line.
Should be kicking off in 10 mins or so. |

OK, first up nosing neat. I left the glass sit for 20 mins, covered. I'll go first then, with a little trepidation...
The first whiff was a little prickly and spirity, a fairly high abv being cask strength - albo has the details of the cask, percentage? Strong oak wood notes with a bit of polish. Something herby or grassy in there too, a little eucalyptus or menthol? _________________ "Whisky is liquid sunshine."
