Douglas Laing have announced the release of SCALLYWAG a sherried Small Batch Speyside Vatted Malt. Bottled at a 46% ABV and non chill-filtered, a blend of first-fill bourbon casks and Spanish Sherry butts from where it has extracted much of its richly spiced, vanilla'd fruity character.

Like Big Peat, Douglas Laing's popular Islay Vatted Malt Scallywag is bottled in small batches, it has been created using only Speyside Malts some of which DL have disclosed, they include Mortlach, Macallan and Glenrothes.

I tasted it last night, a lovely well balanced well put together vatted malt. A good portion of sherry for the sherry oak lovers but it is not a big bold in your face sherry monster, the sherry has been balanced well with the bourbon cask whisky, loads going on, full of flavour. As you can see it has very distinctive packaging, so you wont miss this one on the shelf of the whisky shop.

You will find more info and my tasting note here:

If Scallywag matches the quality of their Big Peat it has got to be worth a try.

As you say William, very distinctive packaging and a good name which will get it noticed by whisky drinkers and the big gift buying market. I will certainly give it a try when i come across it.
