Good day folks,

Has any of you ever seen any sort of list of distilleries sorted by the output of malt spirit? I am just wondering what other companies in the market release about 200,000liters of spirit per annum :D

I aslo want to double-check some odd data I got. I was under the impression that due to the boom in the whisky industry, the prices of barrels have skyrocketed. However, a customer of mine is suggesting that the going price is:

Around £70 for a Bourbon barrel
&
Around £250 for a Sherry butt

What do you think of these numbers? Has anybody of you who's in the industry in the UK got any idea whether these prices are unrealistic, even for a bulk purchase?

Thanks again folks!

Hi Dmitry, I do intend adding this info to the site as part of a major update as there does appear to be interest in all kinds of whisky facts and figures. It is just a case of finding the time to do this.

Meanwhile here is a short list of malt whisky distilleries with the largest pure alcohol output:
    Glenfiddich 13000000 litres
    Roseisle 12500000 litres
    Ailsa Bay 12000000 litres
    Glenlivet 10500000 litres
    Macallan 9800000 litres
    Caol ila 6500000 litres
    Balvenie 6400000 litres
    Glen Grant 6200000 litres
    Dufftown 6000000 litres
    Glen Keith 6000000 litres
    Glenmorangie 6000000 litres
    Auchroisk 5900000 litres
    Miltonduff 5800000 litres

Largest capacity output by company/distillery owner:
Diageo, 28 distilleries, 105230000 litres output
Pernod Ricard/Chivas Brothers, 13 distilleries, 58900000 litres output
William Grant, 4 distilleries, 36200000 litres output
Edrington Group, 4 distilleries, 18240000 litres output
    Bacardi/John Dewars & Sons, 5 distilleries, 17840000 litres output
Whyte & Mackay, 4 distilleries, 12200000 litres output
Pacific Spirits/Inver House Distillers, 5 distilleries, 10300000 litres output
Beam Inc, 2 distilleries, 8700000 litres output
    LVMH/Glenmorangie Co, 2 distilleries, 7300000 litres output

I assume you mean individual distilleries with around 200,000 litre outputs and not companies, here are a few:
    Talisker 2600000 litres
    Blair Athol 2500000 litres
    Glenkinchie 2500000 litres
    Highland Park 2500000 litres
    Lagavulin 2450000 litres
    Strathisla 2400000 litres
    Fettercairn 2300000 litres
    Strathmill 2300000 litres
    Craganmore 2200000 litres
    Dalwhinnie 2200000 litres
    Isl of Jura 2200000 litres
    Bowmore 2000000 litres
    Speyburn 2000000 litres
    Knockdhu 1900000 litres
    Balblair 1800000 litres
    Ben Nevis 1800000 litres
    Old Pulteney 1800000 litres
    Auchentoshan 1750000 litres
    Bruichladdich 1500000 litres

The prices of barrels will be variable, it depends on the companies buying power and the amount they are buying.

Not to divert you away from this wonderful Web site but Johannes van den Heuvel's Malt Madness Web site has a good breakdown of distilleries with facts and figures though some may be a bit out of date these days:

http://www.maltmadness.com/whisky/

I can think of a few around the 100k mark (e.g. Edradour, Kilchoman), don't know about 200k.

Dmitry,

Are you thinking of opening a new distillery? Seems an odd place to be doing due dilligence Wink

In all seriousness, keep asking the questions, cos, being a whisky geek, I'm interested in all this. Cool

Hehe, there is rarely a bad place to ask questions as long as you double and triple check the information. Hell, even wikipedia has its merits.

P.s Folks thanks for the information! :D

Embarassed Dmitry, I read your email quickly this afternoon and did a quick copy and paste reply. I misread 200,000 litres as 2,000,000 litres, quite a difference between the 2. Anyway here are a few distilleries with around a 200,000 litre capacity:

    Glenturret 340,000 litres
    Bladnoch 250,000 litres
    Kilchoman 150,000 litres
    Edradour 130,000 litres
    Wolfburn 120,000 litres
    Daftmill 65,000 litres
    Strathearn 30,000 litres
    Abhainn Dearg 20,000 litres

The figures i list is the annual production capacity for each of these distilleries.
