The Macallan to Close Distillery and Open Another

Edrington has revealed plans to invest £100million in building a new Speyside distillery and visitors' centre for The Macallan, as it mothballs the brand's existing site.

The Scotch drinks group has outlined plans to replace the existing Macallan distillery in Craigellachie, Speyside, which will be "closed but preserved to use again in the future"?, with a new distillery that "is inspirational in its interpretation of contemporary luxury"?.

A spokesperson for The Macallan told The Spirits Business the new site in Speyside, which is still subject to planning permission, will present a "significant increase in capacity"? for the brand, which is struggling to meet demand for its aged whiskies around the world.

However, the group was unable to confirm what the production capacity of the new distillery would be.

Ian Curle, chief executive of Edrington said: "This is a confident investment in the future of The Macallan and its home on Speyside. Our plan for the estate includes a contemporary distillery that embodies the international style of The Macallan and builds on the brand's tradition of quality and craftsmanship.

"As this long-term investment develops it will bring significant employment and economic benefit to the local community."?

Edrington has partnered with architects Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners to build the Teletubby-style distillery and visitors' centre, which is expected to be completed in spring 2017.
