The Scotch Whisky Association is calling for Chancellor George Osborne to scrap the unfair alcohol duty escalator. I am sure you will all agree that tax of 79% on a bottle of whisky is unjustifiable and totally unfair.

You can read more HERE about the Scotch Whisky Associations campaign to abolish the unfair escalator tax that has seen Tax on Scotch Whisky increase by 44% since it was introduced back in 2008.

The Scotch Whisky Association is urging the UK Government to 'Call Time on Duty' in next year's Budget. You can support their campaign by visiting www.calltimeonduty.co.uk

A 79% duty and tax is huge, this duty escalator realy is wrong and it goes a long way to explain the difference in prices we are paying today compared to 2008.

Signed up.

Alcohol duty in this country is simply ridiculous. And how you can then apply VAT to the duty I'll never understand! The SWE has some interesting historical statistics on its Web site:

I signed up also, it really is an unfair tax. I realise thegovernment has to raise money but this should be done fairly.

If you fancy a nostalgic look at what prices we were paying back in 2008 for our favourite drams then have a llok at the posts in the Tesco Whisky Bargains forum

Alcohol has always been and always will be an easy source of income for all governments of the world. If enough people get behind a campaign like this it could have an effect as it is wrong that they target whisky and other alcohol during difficult times. I wish i could vote as many of my purchases are in the UK but i will ceratinly forward a link to my family in Scotland encouraging them to vote.

And if you pay income tax then by the time you buy a bottle of whisky you've been taxed three times on the money you spend. And unless you like to drink your malt straight from the bottle sleeping rough in the park (my own preferred style) you''ll be paying council tax too....

If you shop at The Whisky Shop, the tax % is much less. The tax on Jura Supersition is half what it is at Tesco, even more when it is on offer at Xmas. Laughing

I'm not sure £3 bottles of whisky are a great idea. Although I guess it would squeeze the market for buckfast and cheap cider..
