Whisky Forum - I need help and advice!!!

Hi all, I have a friend getting married and I'm the best man. I'd like to buy the groom a very nice bottle of single malt scotch, I'm thinking between $200-$400 or 122-244 pounds. But i have no idea what to get, he drinks glenlivet 18 a lot. Since he drinks glenlivet all the time, I'd like to buy something different but similar to glenlivet. Now I don't know a thing about scotch so please keep it simple. I've heard Oban is really good and somewhat close, but any advice and information will help, thank you,

Hi and welcome to the Forum. Actually, if your friend realy likes The Glenilivet 18, the next step up would be The Glenilivet XXV which is amazing and would fall in the $$ range you mention. The other alternative would be the Glenfiddich 30 year which is slightly over your budget.

Hi McCulley, I will 2nd Quaich1's Glenilivet XXV (25 year old) which is excellent. You may even be able to get a bottle of the Glenlivet 25 and 21 year old within your budget. Anotther i would suggest is the Benromach 30 year old.

I second the Glenlivet 21 suggestion as well - any older Glenlivet really and you can't miss. Same with Glenfiddich, which is quite similar in style. As for Oban, it's pretty different to the Glenlivet - that's not to say your friend wouldn't like it, but Glenlivet and Glenfiddich would be guaranteed successes.

What makes Glenlivet 18 yr old special is the flavors - Sweet, fruits, vanilla, floral and some sherry. Oban is a western highland malt with a much more full bodied character. Oban is not overly sherried (unless you get the distillers edition), and is not nearly as sweet as Glenlivet.

In my humble opinion, if you are interested in finding a whisky that shares similar flavors to the Glenlivet 18, try Glengoyne 18 yr, Glenfiddich 18, or one of my favorites, Glen Elgin 16 yr. Of course you could stay within the Glenlivet family, but perhaps your friend would appreciate trying something different.
