|

Hello.
I have an unopened bottle of Mortlach 1978 cask strength whisky still in the box and was hoping to get some advice on whether to sell it or hold on to it.
I was given the Whisky as a 30th birthday present and had never opened it. I was about to open it this christmas but because of the strength I thought I'd better read the drinking instructions first and decided it was a bit too good to have after a few beers.
After looking online I see that the bottle is now worth £350, if you can get one, so the value of it must have increased dramatically over the last 11 years (the friend that gave it to me would never have paid that much ).
So... Is it worth holding on to (will it continue to increase in value) or should I sell it?
I cant see myself ever drinking it as I doubt I would appreciate the quality...
Thanks for any advice. |

At the moment the price of whisky is on the up so it will possibly appreciate in value in the short term. Though nothing in this life is a guarantee.
The price you saw in line I would imagine it the retail price and as a rule at a private sale you can expect to make probably 50% of that after fees etc.
If you appreciate whisky drink it. If not and you don't need £150 - ££200 now then hold on to it. It might not go up much in value in the short term given its been released 11 years but in the medium to long-term 10 or so years assuming the whisky market keeps expanding and the bubble doesn't pop it will likely raise in value. |
