Heard this story from a friend who lives in Orkney.

"The company behind plans to establish a new distillery in Orkney have announced the appointment of the former manager of the Highland Park Distillery, Jim Robertson, as a senior advisor.

Grythyttan Whisky, currently based in Sweden, is moving its production to Orkney in 2014. Benny Borgh, managing director of Longship Distillery Limited told The Orcadian last month that the company is owned by the Swedish company Grythyttan Whisky AB, a PLC with more than 1,600 "whisky-loving shareholders"? in Scandinavia.

Mr Borgh announced the appointment of Mr Robertson. He said: "Mr Jim Robertson has been appointed senior advisor for Longship Distillery Ltd, Orkney. Jim's long and fruitful experiences in combination with his excellent contacts in the whisky business will be of great value for the shareholders of both Grythyttan and Longship."?

Mr Borgh earlier said that the company plans to ship their existing distillery equipment to Orkney in mid-January.

However, at this stage he would not reveal where the operation would be based."

Interesting, there is always room for another distillery.

I have never come across Grythyttan Whisky but i see on their website that they say:
Quote:
Orkney next
Welcome to Grythyttan Whisky.

The distillery will be closed from 28 of December 2013.

In January 2014 we move the distillery to Orkney, Scotland.

Sounds like they are upping sticks and stills and moving an already operating distillery across the North Sea to Orkney so they can call the whisky they produce "Scotch Single Malt Whisky".

I havent come across any Grythyttan single malt whisky so i cant comment on it although it will all still be quite young as it was only established in 2007. The craft distillery appears to have produced various styles of whisky in its short life both peated and unpeated and with various cask finishes.

The Swedish company Grythyttan turned to its thousands of investors to get the £1 million needed to build a distillery on Orkney, it appears they have managed to raise this money.

A bit more info from the Grythyttan Whisky website about the Longship Distillery Ltd:

The journey
The equipment will be shipped in January 2014 with one of our Longships. We aim to start distilling in the beginning of May 2014. The First Release is scheduled to 6th of June 2017.

From Sweden to Scotland
For us and many more Scotland is the home of whisky. So the Scottish company is called Longship Distillery Ltd, in homage to our forefathers who once decided to leave Scandinavia and settle in Orkney.

We will bring our existing distillery and visitor centre, and keep on making our highly appreciated whisky. Only this time it will be handcrafted Scotch whisky matured in Orkney.

I wonder what the SWA would think about this. As I've said before, it would appear that there is nothing preventing anyone rolling up to Scotland and making whisky and labelling it so. This would seem to prove the point.

Very interesting William. Single malt has caught on successfully in Sweden with Mackmyra already and now the spirits business sector there is looking to extend their nurturing of the whisky market in Scotland. Good luck to them.
Very Happy
