I really don't want to sound like I'm gloating but I attended the most incredible event at Glenfarclas today as a guest of the Malt Maniacs and Glenfarclas. The Malt Maniacs have been doing a pre-war tasting event over the last few days. Here's the amazing bit, what have I drunk today-
Glenlivet 1899 (that's not a typo 1899!)
Glenfarclas 17 year old bottled in 1940's so 1932 at least
Glenfarclas 40
This
was after a visit to warehouse 1 and a tasting straight from the cask of-
1954 1st fill
1961 1st fill
1962 2nd fill
1965 1st fill
1970 1st fill
1973 1st fill
2002 1st fill
My whisky drinking can only go downhill from here, I really don't mean to boost but wanted to share my experience with some like minded people. |

Rob, pretty amazing indeed. You'll remember that for a life time. I was at my scotch club tasting last night and the Canadian President of our single malt club mentioned that he was at a master class late last year where Jim McEwan was a guest from Scotland to Canada and brought in a 70 year old Glenlivet which he offered to everyone there.
About a year ago, my friend brought over an unopened bottle of 37 year old Bunnahabhain to my house and wanted me to try a few drams. When opportunity knocks, it's great to go with it! Cheers.

The 1899 Glenlivet was bottled in 1907 I think so was only 8 years old but tasted very special. Some taste was in there that others attributed to the liquid being in contact with the glass for 100 odd years. Very different to a modern whisky.
The circa 1930 Glenfarclas was amazing, but my personal highlight was the 1954, a 60 year old straight from the cask in the warehouse, a moment I think I will struggle to surpass!!
I don't even want to know how much that lot is worth! Apparently Glenfarclas are releasing a 60 year old soon at £10,000! It's fair to say all my birthdays and Christmases came at once today!! |

I don't think your boasting at all.
That's such a fantastic thing.
Thanks for sharing that with us. Im jealous but glad at least I get to read about it.
If love to hear more of your thoughts on these drams that most of us here would ever only dream of trying.
Oh and how did you swing that?? |

I'll pop some tasting notes up in the next few days, but I'm not sure my notes will do the whisky justice.
It was kind of a friend of a friend thing who I am helping out with a project which seems to be the way with this sort of thing.
It was a real privilege to hang out with some of the most knowledgable enthusiastic whisky connoisseurs I have met. |

Wow, I don't think any of us can top that! What an incredible line-up! The closest I have come is a 1968 1st fill Glenfarclas a few months ago, which remains the most stunning whisky I have ever tried. |

I still can't believe it myself. As I was typing it I thought that there is only one place where people will actually understand what I have just had.
Mrs Rob doesn't quite grasp that other than my wedding day today was honestly the best day of my life. I can't sleep I'm still so excited about the once in a life-time tasting I had today! I was handed a glass on my way into the warehouse and the group was asked what they fancied trying! The 1954 had so little left in it they had to tilt the cask on its side to get enough whisky near the top to get some out.
It's a hard day when I can't decide if the least favourite whisky I have had was a 2002 straight from the cask Glenfarclas or the normal Glenfarclas 40! And both of those would usually be well beyond my means for a normal dram. |

Is that what you're telling her, or is that the truth? The two things don't necessarily have to be the same thing |

What a brilliant experience Rob and what an amazing line up of whiskies. Glenfarclas really does age well which i am sure you are now in a better position than most to confirm. I will look forward to your notes. _________________ There's no bad whisky. Just good whisky and better whisky. |

So some tasting notes, I'm sorry I can't remember all of them but these awe what I noted -
1954 -N Fresh grass almost cannabis smell (never actually smoked it myself I have to add!!) with tropical fruit, not as dark in colour as expected.
P Grassy taste again with cigar ash and exotic fruits to die for, pineapple taste
F Longest finish ever, even at cask strength zero burn or harshness. Silk smooth when swallowed.
1961-N Treacle cake seemed very thick when poured and looked like dark treacle too. Also toffees, rum and sweet sherry.
P Toffee sweet, rum again like rum and raisin ice cream without the dairy.
L Long lingering again sooooo smooth out of all of them this had the most incredible finish with sticky toffee pudding coming late.
1962- N Apples and pears. Much lighter in colour like weak apple juice. Make that sweet apples like the apple out of fresh apple pie.
P Again apples with a hint of sweet sherry
F Sweet again smooth pleasant but not as long as the 1961.
1930-N Completely different, quite dark in colour with Peat ambers on the nose and just a hint of smoke.
P Camp fire when the embers are burning without smoke, tiny amount of sweet peat.
F Hint of cigar smoke, long with again maybe something sweet just trying to break thru.
Glenlivet 1899- N Very delicate and light almost floral, lightly scented floral candles
P - Flowers again very subtle and incredibly light, fresh almost elderflower. Hint of off taste attributed by others to whisky be in contact with glass for so long.
F - Again subtle with flowery marsh mellows, long if you let it but you had to concentrate.
I think that my lot, the 2002 tasted like a cross between the 105 and a 15 year old but very full body but short finish.
Any questions please ask!!! I should hopefully have some pictures soon which I'll put up. |
