I didnt set out to make money from whisky but as some of the bottles that i had bought to drink in the future had gone up so much in value it got more and more difficult to open them. I have now sold a few which have fetched more than 10 times what i paid for them and used the money to buy more to drink in the future.

I have never bought with the intention of selling on for profit nor will i.

I've never set out to become a whisky dealer either. I'm just astounded at some of the things I'm seeing. I bought a bottle of Arran Orkeney Bere last august, just to try something different. It cost me £42, so I'm astounded to see one make £85 in an auction two weeks ago.

II have a couple of bottles I'd set aside for special occasions, but with how they've rocketed in value it becomes harder and harder to justify opening them each and every month.

I am collecting whisky for drinking in the next few decades, when I can look at my impressive collection and then enjoy them. I would find it hard to sell any of my bottles, I'm too attached to let them go.

I tuck away a few limited releases which i like to be drunk in the future which has developed into a a colection but i do intend to drink it but that os difficult when some are willing to pay crazy money for it.

I have bought a few bottles now as investments, it would be mad not to when you know something will multiply in value. All my investment purchases have always been under £100 limited special releases and always a whisky that i enjoy, often buying 2 bottles and drinking one. The few pound i have made has always went towards buying more whisky.

I like finding hard to find bottlings that are affordable. Mainly by browsing small town liquor stores.

An excellently priced 18yo fiddich at a steal for £50 selling even today for over £300. As good an 'investment' as any really.

If so, I do hope they sleep soundly safe in the knowledge that they had profited directly from charity. Still I'm sure you can justify it to yourselves.

Scum of the earth?

II think murderers, rapists, drug dealers Sheffield Wednesday fans are more eserving of such a title personally! Laughing

I'm not aware of the charitable connections, but how have the charities associated with these bottles lost out to the profiteers?

LOL, Sheffield Wednesday fans, I like it. I'm sure the charities did OK out of that one, but the flippers clearly did even better. The trend these days seems to be for the producers to cut themselves a slice of the secondary market cake and the number of special and limited releases is growing relentlessly. I do agree with albo, it encourages upward pressure on prices.

I don't intend to get on my high horse about this though, that would be like an atheist getting involved in a theological debate. We've had everyone's views on other threads, and good discussions they were too. The original question is who actually speculates (and will put their hand up to it) so let's live and let live.

Many of the Glenfiddich Foundation Reserve bottles went to forum members here as its release was originally announced exclusively on here by William and it sold out virtually overnight. I got 3 bottles and still have 1 left. I can say it is way more than a standard 18 yo old, it was a very rare single cask non chill filtered whisky bottled at a strength of 50.8%. The charity done very well out of it and were very pleased with the money they raised and if others wanted to sell their bottlings that was up to them but i think most on here bought them to drink and did so.

i have to say albo your "Scum of the earth" comment is way over the top and not called for. I got a few bottles thanks to William. I have 2 left, if i decide to drink them or sell them for a huge profit one day because i held onto them for years while they became rarer and accumulated value that is up to me or indeed anyone else who does the same. The charity did very well out of this and were very happy with what they made but it is the people who have held onto them that has made them rarer and more valuable.

The fact is this forum is for whisky drinkers, collectors and investors but it seems going by a number of your posts you have a problem with collectors and investors and quite frankly spoiling the atmosphere around here a little. I cant afford every whisky released but i dont moan about it as i know many others can, thats life.
