Whisky Forum - HP 10 LOL?

Hello All,

I love to start a good convo and to me I think this is a pretty shady move by HP...

Personally I loved the 12 it was one of my first single malts ( im sure many people are in the same boat), it was always a "reasonable" price... for here in Canada lol and very drinkable.

I know this happened over some time but it really feels like HP made up this 10 y/o release because single malts scotch gained alot of attention world wide and their 12 began to fly off the shelves as a good price point.

Whats a good multiple million dollar distillery to do? Jack up the price and "release" a lower age statement for a lower price so the people who used to enjoy the 12 don't stop buying their products completely?

Anyone else see it differently?

We don't get the 10 over here so we don't really know on this specific one. Though Quaich1 holds the HP10 in very high esteem. He is a fellow Canadian.

To be fair to HP doing this is not as bad as the likes of Macallan who abandoned age statements altogether and went NAS with their 1824 range. Everyone is at it, it seems HP are doing similar things but at least they haven't gone down the NAS road just yet

The Highland Park 10 is not available here in Scotland.

I would guess the HP 10 it is Highland Parks attempt to preserve ageing stock. There is now a huge demand for single malt worldwide and i dont think enough ageng stock to meet this demand in the near future. HP removed the age statement whisky from travel retail some time ago and replaced it with no age statement whisky. The move to HP 10 in some markets is probably just another attempt to preserve stock.

I have a strong dislike for you Europeans who actually get a chance at reasonably priced drams...

HP 12 is $77 canadian here (roughly 42 pounds)

Thats a fun point, EXCEPT these high prices are only on single malt scotch because they can, and its became much more popular in the recent years what with the likes of Ron Burgandy and Barney Stinson.

You can still buy a 70cl bottle of low level vodka or whisky for $23 -$25 bucks Canadian, which is still higher then most countries but not outrageous like $77 for a 12 y/o main stream scotch and will still get you just as wasted and promotes just as many "drinking problems".

Also my $.02 I dont think very many people with serious drinking problems are looking at fine single malt scotch as their answer for daily drunks, no one can afford that lol.
