Following the natural cask strength Thor then the smoky complexity of the excellent and very highly rated Loki, Highland Park has announced the release of Highland Park Freya the third and penultimate bottling in the acclaimed Valhalla Collection.

I would expect the final bottle will be Odin as he was the leader of the gods. I will certainly have a bottle as Loki was superb. |

| I am sure this will sell quickly given the reviews on Loki which i agree was superb, Freya has went up another £10 from Loki whch is no surprise. |

Nor I. For I cannot, no matter how good, justify £140 for a 15yo bottle of whisky. Geez, I didn't spend a penny more than that on a bottle of 21yo Rosebank 2010 OB last year and this is a bottling for a new release from a well established distillery.....not a close distillery with diminishing stocks.
I thought Diageo were taking the *** with their price point on the 2013 specials but this takes the biscuiit.

This is totally different from Loki. Loki was a sherried shape changer, similar in some ways to the 18. Smoke and dried fruits, ginger, citrus peels.
Freya is bourbon casked and much fresher. A blast of play-doh vanilla on the nose, then apple peel and berry notes on the palate and a really milky mouthfeel. Doesn't develop much.
If buying for collecting/investing you may be able to justify the price tag, for drinking I would find it hard to reconcile. And what is whisky for?

Freya is from 100% first fill bourbon casks apparently.

I did try this last Friday and I actually enjoyed it. Lots and lots of vanilla. Perhaps a touch one dimensional in that respect for me. I don't think I could justify the cost in all honesty but it wasn't a bad drop.
For what it's worth I preferred the Loki to this.
I also tried the Thor but I'm not sure about that one. I get what they are trying but I'm not sure it really works |

I am well aware that it is different, I was referring to the quality not the style and this price tag is not a problem for me, it is the going rate now for these distillery bottlings and I do want to taste it so I will pay the asking price. |

Just offering my impressions, having tried it, not just in response to you. As for quality, I don't think it's as good as Loki, which in turn isn't as good as the 18, which can be had for £80 (and was available for £65 only a year ago). If you believe Freya is worth £140, carry on.
