It's nothing short of a disgrace. I think Diageo have been casting envious eyes at Dalmore, Macallan, etc and decided they'd like a slice of the pie. The marketing bumpf about the 'rarity', the 'decanters' and the civil engineering tie-in is almost like some kind of pastiche, especially to anyone who knows anything about this malt. Still, I'm sure the rich foreigners will lap it up.

The fact is this is the way whisky prices are going so this is no surprise but i dont like this 50cl bottle nonsense and that there is no age statement on a couple of the new bottles as i do believe age should be related to price.

I am a big fan of the Mortlach 16, there has been the odd slightly sulphured batch in the past but over all the majority i have tasted have been superb and i will certainly give the Mortlach Rare Old and travel retail Mortlach Special Strength a try as they wont bust the bank and i will have to see some brilliant reviews to consider the 18 year old but no 25 year old is worth £600, not from an operational distillery.

Price aside, i don't like this emerging trend of smaller bottles, if the price has to go up so be it but don't reduce the bottle size. I can't see many knowledgeable whisky drinkers paying £600 for a 50cl bottle, I think some of these bottles will be left collecting dust on the shelves alongside the Diageo Managers Choice range.
