The one's that are not to your taste as mentioned above tend not to be what I would call "dominant" drams. For example, Macallan Gold is OK but it won't set the world of single malts on fire. It's not bad. However, it lacks what I call an aromatic or taste footprint which is unique. However, the Macallan 12 was and is (if you can find a shop with some old stock) a more memorable dram. The Aberlour 10 follows the same pattern in that it is more than drinkable but lacks that "je ne sais quoi" as they say. The Aberlour 16 however is excellent. I can see why you like the ones you do.

Everyones taste will vary so what does it for one may not do it for another. Also the quality of individual expressions from the same distillery will vary.
You wont be alone by saying that Jura doesnt do it for you, i am not a big fan of the Jura 10 or Superstition but the 16 is very good IMO and the peaty Jura Prophecy is good.
Personally i cant fault the Aberlour range even the entry level 10 and 12 year olds are good for there price tags. |

The entry level Jura's dont do much for me either. However i have no complaints about the Aberlour 10 when you can pick it up for £20, the range from Aberlour gets better the more you pay, the 16 and a'bunadh would be my stand out drams from Aberlour.
The Macallan Gold doesnt quite have the amount of sherry influence which the Macallan 10 sherryoak had but it is still a good whisky IMO. The Amber is OK and the Sienna is excellent. |

| The Jura 16 and Prophecy are the good whiskies from Jura. |

| Some distilleries offer superb entry level whiskies and some you have to step up a bit to find their better whiskies, Talisker 10 and Ardbeg 10 are 2 examples of superb entry level whiskies. Where Aberlour 10 is good for the money, it certainly gets better with age. |

The Jura 21, 200th Anniversary Edition is excellent. _________________ "Always carry a large flagon of whisky in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake."

I try to steer clear of entry level stuff, most of the time they churn it out en masse, slap a label on it and pray for for the best, Most consumers sit in the entry level bracket and that's who the distilleries try to please so they are all a bit.....generic.
You don't have to go far, just to the next level in most ranges, up to the 15s or 16s etc you do that and you notice a massive quality jump. _________________ "Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whisky is barely enough." |

I've been drinking malts about the same as you. The only one that stopped me in my tracks and exploded my taste buds was Glenmorangie 18. Never tasted anything like it or since, just extraordinary.
Glenmorangie Original is also quite excellent, but nothing else has rocked my boat quite as much at the 18.
I was given a bottle of Bowmore 12. Not knowing anything about smoky Islay whiskies at the time, I thought the whiskey was 'off'. I was about to throw it away when I ready some on-line reviews explaining that the flavour was intentional. I'm working hard to develop my taste buds and I'm getting there.
Hoping for a bottle of Lagavulin 16 for Christmas |

If Santa doesn't deliver - laga 16 is about £38 @ Costco.
Beware - it does taste like an ashtray (in a nice way..!) |
