Head-to-head Aberlour 10 and 16

Here's my taste notes from this afternoon for another head-to-head:

Aberlour 10

Neat-

Nose: Cherry blossom chocolate candy (with nuts and cherry cream), summer meadow flowers, citrus and chocolate macaroons with coconut.

Palate: Spice, sherry notes, smooth and creamy with mixed nuts.

Finish: Lingering, mild dark chocolate, coffee and spice; late cherry lozenges.


Aberlour 16

Neat-

Nose: Carmels, orange marmelade, orange rind n' spice, hint of hazel nuts, toffee and orange-butterscotch notes.

Palate: Honey n' spice, toffee, chewy, syrupy and oaky foreground.

Finish: Long, stronger dark chocolate, bold black coffee, building oakiness, and hint of sweet dates and dark stewed fruit.

Comments: The nose on the 10 is really inviting especially the chocolate and cherry cream. The 16 shows its maturity and has an obvious benefit in this case of aging gracefully. The palate is memorable.

The Aberlour 10 has always been a bit disappointing for me, not quite sure why. I like the nose, which I find very balanced, but the palate is always a let-down, with an off note every time I've had it. Luckily it didn't put me off Aberlour in general, since I'm a great fan of the a'bunadh.

Alex, the last couple of bottles i have had of the Aberlour 10 i thought it had improved somewhat, i thought it was excellent for the price. I wondered if they had tweeked the bourbon to sherry cask ratio with a little less sherry in the mix. Whatever theu have done i thought it was very good.

Cheers for the notes Murray, i very much like the Aberlour 16, the 18 year old is also worth a try if you havent yet tried it.

Well ive just finished the 10 and on first day i was dissapointed tried again two days later and it was slowly getting better, its now finished and overall not as bad as i first thought but defo not one i will be getting again again and again, 6 out 10 and no more but at £20 its great value.

The 16 is a good solid dram, not greatly keen on the 10, always seems a little weak to me, would love to try a old aberlour,
