|
|
Evening all.
I am a relative newcomer to the world of single malts, but over the past year or so have got through 6 or 7 different bottles as I try to find my perfect whiskey (it's a tough job, but someone's got to do it!).
So far my favourite, by quite some way, has been the Tobermory 10 Year.
Can anyone recommend something similar to this fine drop? I love the spices finish it gives along with its peaty characteristics.
Thanks in advance.

Hi there - welcome to the forum.
I understand that Tobermory no longer make whisky however the same distillery makes Ledaig which from memory is as you describe with a peaty finish... Personally I'm not a fan, which leads me to a question- what bottles did you try before plumping on Tobermory? |

The Tobermory distillery still produces whisky, both Tobermory and the peaty Ledaig.
Given your taste i would suggest Talisker 10, Highland Park 12 or Bunnahabhain 12 |

Personally I find Tobermory lacking, I understand Archie the Inventor is the head distiller and PC Plum does the blending.....so I'm not suppressed. (Anyone who's watched Balamory will understand )
Joking aside, it's all a bit dull and lifeless. If you like spice and a bit of smoke Talisker 10 or HP12 as mentioned are good. For decent price it's worth taking a punt on the entry level Ardmore, this is a peated Speyside whisky (not many of them), it's spicy and the peat is nice, smokey and we'll balanced. It's the main malt in Teachers which is what gives it the sweet malty character and smokey whiff. _________________ "Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whisky is barely enough." |

Thanks for the swift replies.
I'm actually half way through a bottle of Talisker 10 and while I enjoy its smokey character, for me it lacks the spicey after taste that gives Tobermory a bit more complexity.
Other single malts I've tried so far:
Jura Origin
Glenlivet 12*
Glenmorangie Lassanta
Old Pulteney
Laphroaig 10*
Talisker 10*
The starred whiskers are those that I'm currently halfway through, trying to maintain having 3 different options available at any one time!
Sounds like Ardmore, HP or Bunnahabhain is where I need to turn next... |

HP is the most well made of the 3 and the best all rounder. Ardmore Traditional cask is young and no age statement, it's matured in quarter casks that give faster aging and a spicy note but depending on your palate some find it harsh. 46% abv and not chill filtered. _________________ "Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whisky is barely enough." |

| I think you can currently bag an Ardmore @ Lidl for 24.99 which is quite reasonable. As has been said HP is a good all rounder - but Bunnahabhain is an excellent distillery and is well worth a shout. The 12 comes out at over 46% which is always a bonus. |

| Take a look at the Compass Box Spice Tree, Glenfiddich 14 Rich Oak, Highland Park 12, Dalwhinnie 15, Deanston Virgin Oak. More towards the peaty side Port Charlotte The Peat Project, Ardbeg 10, Kilchoman 100% Islay. |

Another spicy choice you may want to try, Writer's Tears Irish whisky.
Try a shot in a bar to see if that is similar to what you like. I sampled some and found it to be very good, and ginger spicy. _________________ Slainte |

After much deliberation, I picked up a bottle of the Dalwhinnie 15 (on offer at Tesco for £27, offer ends tomorrow I believe).
Looking forward to a dram or two tomorrow night. |
