I was given a set of whiskey stones as a Christmas present - what are peoples thoughts on them?

Tried them for the first time last night. They did work, but you needed at least 4 of them to have a decent cooling affect.

I don't cool my whisky, I drink it as room temperature. The colder you get whisky the tighter it goes, it's needs to be warm to let the flavours and scents out.

As such, I can't comment on these sorry.

I've never used those stones and have never used real ice either. Room temp for me.
I heard of a chap who ruined a real old Macallan dram by adding more ice than scotch.

All a matter of taste/preference but chilling your whisky dulls the flavours and i dont want to do that with a good single malt. I suppose it could improve a rough/harsh blended whisky or make a whisky more refreshing on a warm day.

Mark, as Innes says chilling your whisky will dull the flavours, single malts are best enjoyed at room temperature but as Innes says whisky can be refreshing if chilled on a warm day.

As many have said before me on here, drink your whisky how you best enjoy it, there isnt a right or wrong way.

I tried some stones in my glencairn glass but it smashed it, so I put the stones back in the garden... Rolling Eyes I don't think they worked... 😉

OK, OK, point taken gentlemen.

The stones are back in the freezer and away from my whiskey, will just have to use them once every now and then to keep the other half happy!

Drinking without them tonight and I have to admit you lot are right, the whiskey is more flavoursome at room temperature.

Please don't think our opinion is correct, it's only our opinions, you should always drink your whisky how you want to drink it, there will always be a bit of banter thrown in, don't worry we won't throw the stones ( they went ages ago ) my daughters boyfriend just got some of those stones, I gave him a plastic beaker to drink from, but then he does drink jack all the time Rolling Eyes

You let your daughter have a boyfriend who drinks JD, what's the matter with you man! Okay, it's technically whiskey, but even so.

I wouldn't agree with your opinions if I didn't believe they were right, based on evidence. The same whiskey tonight without the stones tastes much more interesting than with them last night.
