A little back story -
I have had the pleasure of trying Te Bheag and Poit Dhubh 8 blends, from The Gaelic Whiskies. The Te Bheag is great tasting and value. The Poit Dhubh somewhat less so.
As far as rum finishing, I have tried the Balvenie Caribbean Cask, which is highly regarded, unfortunately I felt it was a bit of a dud. No, more like a big dud.
Jump ahead to last weekend. I decided to open the Mac Na Mara Rum Finish, also from The Gaelic Whiskies. It has been aged for a final 12 months in Guyanan Rum casks.
I bought it to try, given the relative low cost an the based on The Gaelic Whiskies batting 500 with my taste buds. But I wondered if rum finishing was just something I will never like.
Well, the verdict is in on a single sample dram - fantastic dessert like blend. I was actually shocked it is as good as it is. Very sweet, so if you don't like sweet it may not suit, but if it's available near you - I recommend this inexpensive beauty. _________________ Slainte |

The Mac Na Mara Rum Finish is very good great to see a unchillfiltered blend even though it is only bottle at 40% ABV
I have to say i also like the Balvenie Caribbean Cask, both are drams i have to be in the mood for. |
