All the books listed here are worth having:
http://www.scotchmaltwhisky.co.uk/books.htm
Just depends what sort of book your are after, for one which rates the whisky there is no more comprehensive book than Jim Murrays Whisky Bible, 101 Whiskies to Try Before You Die does not rate the whiskies it is just a list of 101 whiskies personally i would recommend the Whisky Bible over 101 Whiskies. If you want a book which is a complete guide to the whisky making process, history and the whiskies then "Whisky The Definitive World Guide to Scotch" by Michael Jackson is excellent, it also includes tasting notes for the key whiskies from each distillery.
You will find all of these at Amazon Whisky Books |

I'm not great fan of Murray's Whisky Bible.
IMO "Malt Whisky Yearbook"? is much more interesting for this kind of annual releases.
Ian Buxton's 101 Series could be a bit boring but I have all three of them. |

Whether you will agree with Jim Murrays tasting notes or not it is worth having at least one copy of his Whisky Bible. I agree that 101 Whiskies to Try Before You Die is boring and really has little indication of the quality of the whiskies listed.
For distillery facts and figures and a bit of history the the Malt Whisky Year Book is good but it only includes a short tasting note for 2 whiskies from each distillery, so not much good if it is the whisky and not the distillery you want to read about.
Whisky by Michael Jackson has been around a few years now but a great whisky book and Charles MacLean has a few good books. |

My worry with the Whisky Bible is that it will mainly list whiskies that are simply out of my price range. £35 is just about my limit for a bottle at the moment.
Does it also list single malts that I'll be able to pick up on offer in my local supermarket, or is it all rare, expensive or new release whiskies? |

| The Whisky Bible lists almost all Scotch single malts and blends you can think of, from the cheapest no age statement whiskies to the rarest, oldest most expensive whiskies you You may not always agree with the ratings and comments but there is no other book to match it. |

| The whisky bible is a good reference point, but remember it's an opinion of one chap who has his own tastes, ( I do like this book ). Also the malt whisky year book is a great buy too, I would recommend both... |

This is one I own and have referred to very often in my journey:
http://www.waterstones.com/waterstonesweb/products/cassell/dominic+roskrow/1001+whiskies+you+must+try+before+you+die/8815652/
Note: 1001 whiskies, not 101.
The problem with these books is that once they are published they are out of date, due to new releases.
The 1001 whiskies book is excellent. It doesn't give scores but does give some tasting notes. Most of the content is information about a particular whisky and the distillery. There are nuggest of information in here that I have not heard anywhere else so it's realy quite interesting.
Covers Scotch, Irish, US, Canadian, Japanese, Europe and "the rest of the world" as well as a glossary of terms _________________ "Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whisky is barely enough." |

DevonMark if you are interested in "1001 Whiskies You Must Try Before You Die" you will find it a few pound cheaper £16.59 including free delivery at Amazon it is £20 at Waterstones.
Dominic Roskrow does turn out some bright colourful, well illustrated coffee table whisky books and his writing style is perfect for for introducing Scotch whisky to someone new to it. |
