Does anybody like private bottlings?
Ive tried a few, and i think Adelphi is so far my favourite- they tend to select rather unusual whiskys. Gordon and MacPhail tend to be a bit boring- McKillops Choice has some nice whiskys too.
Just wondering what others thought tho - |

I have always enjoyed anything i have had from Douglas Laing, I recently had a young 7 year old Bowmore from Douglas Laing and i have had a couple of DL's Port Ellen bottlings which were all very enjoyable.

Gordon & MacPhails offer a huge range of whisky from so many different distilleries, some bottlings they offer are excellent some have been just ok. Out of interest Vcdman what bottlings from Adelphi did you find good.

I really enjoyed the 9yr Bunnahabain. The seaweed and salty peat - When i was craving more i tasted an 10yr Ardbeg and it was so flat in comparison. I think ill see if i can still get that bottling.
Also i enjoyed the unusual Clynelish 15yr. It had this waxy lemony smell which i wasnt sure if i liked but the taste with a sweetness made it irresistible.
I havent seen or heard of Douglas Laing - Ill have to look out for it. |

Independent Bottlers play a very important role in the Scotch Whisky Industry. They offer a great range of whisky sometimes from distilleries that have been mothballed or even demolished. They acquire casks and mature them as they see fit, this produces whisky sometimes better, sometimes not as good as the original distillery bottlings.
Personally i love Independent bottlings as they offer me slightly different whisky from distlleries i know i already like but with the indy bottlers stamp on it.
Vcdman i dont know what it is like in Australia but this is what John told me in a previous post relating to limited edition whisky such as whisky from independent bottlers.
| Quote: | Hi Mac
What i have been told about limited edition whisky not being available in the USA is that the main problem is that the whisky company requires import licenses for very small amounts of whiskies. The process of obtaining a license is not straight forward and the main distributors in the USA would not be bothered with such small quantities. Such small quantities would have distribution problems as there would not be enough to supply all retailers which would leave some unhappy retailers. Overall financially the profit weighed against what the whisky company has to go through to distribute limited edition whiskies in the USA does not make it worth while for them or the distributing companies they may use.
John | I dont know if it will be kind of the same down in Aus. when it comes to import licences and this be may why you are not familar with Douglas Laing.

I found that bottlings from Douglas Laings Old Malt Cask series where very good, his Port Ellen bottlings where particularly good.

I have had a couple of bottles from Adelphi, one was pretty good and one i wasnt so taken with. The one which i liked was a Bunnahabhain 11 year old and the one i didnt think much of was a Glenrothes 6 year old.

Picked up one of Ian Macleod's AWGT - the 8yo Islay at cask strength. Any ideas where it's from exactly? I'd guess Lagavullin but am interested in others' thoughts.

Cheers. Tapadh leibh. | Hi Iain
I had a bottle of the Islay As We Get It quite a while ago and remember thinking it wasnt as peaty as the descriptions i had read about it and which lead me to buy it but a very nice whisky all the same. I did think it could possibly be from the Lagavulin distillery but i am not sure if Diageo lets any of their precious barrels of Lagavulin go to the independent bottlers.

I went on a Signatory buying spree last year since some of those Un-chillfiltereds are very inexpensive. Its kind of a crapshoot, even with a bottler as good as Signatory.
Signatory UCF Highland Park 13 yo 1993: pass
Signatory UCF Highland Park 15 yo 1990: good
Signatory UCF Laphroaig 7 yo 2000: excellent
Gordon & Macphail Connoiseur's Choice Coal Ila 10 yo 1995: amazing
Laing Provencance Port Ellen 1982 25 yo: excellent
I've heard that the G&M Connoiseur's Choice Ardbeg 9 yo, which I figured might be good, is not. Anyone tried that one? |

Anyone tried that one? | I had a G&M Connoiseur's Choice Ardbeg 1996 not so long ago and was a little disappointed with the peat level, it disappeared as quick as it appeared, it wasnt a great representitive of Ardbeg still a nice dram but the distillery botllings are way better than this was IMO.
