TN: Ledaig 8 year old - 2014 Dramboree (Isle of Mull, Scotland)

If you asked me to name my top five Scottish whisky distilleries still making whisky, the peated Ledaig from the Tobermory distillery would be in this lineup. Bottlings from 1974, and others post 1993 have helped form my view. This eight year old bottling by The Whisky Exchange London of a single sherry butt number 900173 took place in 2014. Now, I do like a decent amount of ageing for my single malts, so drinking this relatively youthful age is quite rare for me. Bottled at a show stopping 58.8% volume, the psychedelic label itself is worthy of both a mention in writing and a photo.

A clear mid amber, the sherry cask worked its magic. Neat, the nose is strongly peaty, which I like, with aromas of honeycomb and iodine as well. The mouthfeel starts slightly sweet and strong, building its power progressively until the mild burning sensation smothers your tastebuds. The peaty profile can be tasted as well, though there is a seam of honey within this. The length is noticeably long and substantial.

With a few drops of water from a pipette, the nose opens up to reveal wet heather, more iodine and a fresher peat nuance. The palate is tangy, citrusy and alive, and the alcoholic burn has been somewhat tempered. With water, this could easily turn into a "session whisky".
