Its my Birthday Next month, and usual go and treat myself with a fancy new bottle of the good stuff every year! This year However, I fancy delving into to the world of Whisky auction to get my bottle. I have been watching a few over the last couple of months to see how the prices are going, and what bottles are popping up ect. But I wanted to ask,
Do you just pay the final price of what you have bid on (and won of course!) at the end or are there any hidden charges?

I know there is a % what changes between site to site, but is that the Sellers problem or the Buyers?

Different auction houses attract different buyers/sellers and prices vary considerably for the same bottle.

I'm using often whiskyauction.com from Germany and haven't had any problems yet. If delivery costs to UK are not too high, I suggest that you try them at least once - they are less popular than others from UK and you can get some good prices for less popular items. There's no additional charges for buyers!

Scotch Whiskey Auctions charge 10% commission on the hammer price plus carriage.

Some people moan about having to pay commission but it's the nature of the beast I find Scotch Whiskey Auctions offer the best variety of whiskies available and never have issues with them unlike some of the other Auction web sites.

Remember that you have to pay VAT on the premium - so Scotch Whisky Auctions is 10% hammer + 20% VAT. So 12% on top of the bid.

Whisky.Auction is 15% + VAT, whisky auctioneer is 10% + VAT, Just whisky is 12% inc VAT and regular auction houses are typically 20% + online surcharge (3% ish) + VAT - so can quickly hit 30% on top of hammer.

I buy a fair amount at auction and it can work out expensive if you get it a bit wrong. Most of the whisky auction sites require you to pay a bidders premium (usually £5) before they let you bid as a one off fee.

If you pay with credit card they often add a fee (+VAT) of 3%.

Maybe if you are after something specific you should ask if anyone on here has one and would swap/sell?? If it is allowed?

One of the main auction sites in Scotland has the following policy:

BUYER'S PREMIUMS
"On top of the hammer price for the lots, there is a charge of 10% commission, which is subject to VAT. VAT is chargeable on premiums and fees, but not on the price of the whisky. Postage costs will also incur VAT where applicable".

I'm with this, I have used plenty of times and never had an issue, had some great bargains and no commission to buyers and with the £ being strong against the € and cheap delivery charges considering it is coming from Germany it is definitely worth a look.

I thought that they added supplicate charges. Its Crazy to think how little you actually save after those add ons.

But thank you chaps ill give the whiskyauction.com a try!

The only extra is €3 per item packing oh and insurance is free up to €500 and then €10 for every subsequent €500 but I think this is standard and obviously postage, for my collection I have bought a Port Ellen 1st annual release for about £1200 a few months back and in January 2 Karuizawa cask 6207 for £740 a piece when a few other auctions they were about £1700 each.

Quick question when buying from whiskyauction.com and posting to the UK do you have to pay any import duty/ VAT/ tax? I am about to bid on something and dont want to get any surprises further down the line when they come to deliver it.

I've never had a problem, usually delivered by DHL by end of week following auction and can also be fully tracked, I have used them about 10 times.

Hope this helps
