On to my last unopened bottle - the Aberlour 12. This was really the first whisky I bought that wasn't picked due to anything I had read about it. My first risky purchase. I had a set amount of money and by wanting to try a new whisky every time this was one of a few I could have got. The others that I hadn't already bought and were around the same price were The Macallan Gold, Highland Park 12, The Singleton, Talisker Distillers Edition and the Aberlour 10. There were a few more that were cheaper too.

I checked the WB15 when I got home to see if I had made a good choice and it scores 88.5 which puts it at the top end of the 'very good to excellent whiskies - definitely worth buying' category. The others were either unscored or only 1 point over (The Macallan) and 1 point under (The Aberlour 10). Lets see.

Quote:
Colour: A dark amber with slow forming legs.

Nose: Definite sherry influence. Sweetness in the background. Apples come through after a while. Vanilla too.

Palate: A gentle spice, slightly sweet. After a few tastes I was getting something that I couldn't put a name too - a warm richer flavour. The bottle notes say chocolate, cinnamon and ginger. I'd say nearer chocolate than the others if I had to pick but its not what I would say is chocolate.

Finish: Gentle spice fading out to a dry oakiness.

Another whisky that I would drink again but I have to say that this is probably the least enjoyable of my current collection. It's not bad at all, and like I say, one I would drink again. It just doesn't stand out from my crowd. Its like saying that £90 is worse than £100. Technically correct but not that you'd really notice.

I'm still waiting for that day when I open a new bottle that I haven't had before and it just doesn't do it for me. Until then I will keep trying, but I have no new bottles to try at the moment although I have a birthday coming up and Christmas is coming soon so hopefully my tasting journey will continue.

Ben

Ben I will quote Williams signature on this forum.

There's no bad whisky. Just good whisky and better whisky.

Which is true most of the time.

I find the younger Aberlour such as the 10 & 12 enjoyable, easy to drink and good value but the 16, 18 and a'bunadh are very good.

I have to agree with both you and William. I keep trying them and all I say is I like that one! I thought maybe I was doing something wrong Razz
