|
|
I'll be going through my local duty free in the next couple of weeks and I'm looking to pick up one of the Balvenie's listed above: Tun 1509 or 25 year triple cask. I've tried neither so am looking for input. The 25 year Tripke cask is about $40(CAD) more so won't factor in on my decision.
Input appreciated! . |

I'd get the 25 triple cask.
Only reason is the Tun 1509 is available in the LCBO now and hasn't been flying off the shelf. 400 bucks is a hard sell for a NAS Whisky. Although Dave Stewart says the youngest is from the early 90's. |

I've Followed the tun Series alot, and have Never Seen a Review which Rates the 25 Triple above any of the 1509 batches yet. Have you?
I don't cafe about NAS vs Age Statement is the Whisky is better myself. |

| I've spoke with David at Balvenie whilst its a NAS whisky, there is some old casks in there, I wouldn't be quick to judge. |

Indeed.
Not sure about this one, but the tun1401 used to publish the cask makeup in each batch including date and cask type. Had some very old whisky and younger whisky included, so yes NAS, but average age was pretty high.
To be honest, I lost interest when they vastly increased the size of the vatting tun and then kept the bottle price the same. So not had the tun 1509. _________________ "Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whisky is barely enough." |

The Balvenie Tun 1509 batch 1 was very good and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it
I have no doubt the Balvenie 25 Triple Cask will be good but is it good enough to justify its asking price? There is a lack of reviews on the Balvenie 25 Triple Cask, in fact I haven't read any reviews on it which does put me off. Someone has rated the 25yo 3 out of 5 on the World of Whiskies website but didn't make a comment. Personally I have given the Balvenie 25 a miss as the Balvenie seem to want to keep its quality or perhaps lack of quality a secret. |

Lol. I haven't seen a review that rates the tun 1509 over the Glenlivet 12 yet either? So what does that mean?
My main point is the Tun 1509 is available locally to the OP , so if looking for something hard to get for us in Ontario, I'd get the 25 triple cask |

| Personally I would pick 1509, simply on the fact there are some old casks in there, yes it is a NAS but it is a quality bottle, it is also a higher abv.. You could look at the price for the 30 ? |

Yes, the cheapest I've seen the 30 is $1000 CAD. Where are these places you so speak of lol? My interest is peaking.
Thanks for all the valuable input from everyone. The duty free sells the Tun 1509 for $369 CAD and the 25 triple for $399. They don't have any of the 30 year. Lots to think about. |

Fightingirish, no offence, but if you haven't seen a Review of Balvenie 1509 batch 2 Rated above others like the Common types (glenlivet 12) then that's Perhaps because you haven't been looking for one...they are out there.
Also what Reviews I have seen of the Triple cask are worrying. And just because it's difficult to find doesn't mean it's good does it?[/quote] |

No offence taken at all.
I think you haven't a firm grasp on what getting Whisky in The people's republic of Ontario is like.
When I say difficult to find, I'm mean impossible. Not available......no stock anywhere.
The LCBO is the "ultimate Power in the Universe" as far as liquor goes.
We can't import from anywhere.......without having the Whisky sent to the LCBO first. Then they bend you over and hit you with ridiculous fee's and import taxes and duty. In some cases doubling the price.
While I totally understand your feelings on the Balvenie.....hell, I still have a bottle on hold at the LCBO. I just can't bring myself to buy it for more than say a Glenlivet XXV or Glenmorangie Signet.
To the OP, I do believe the Tun 1509 will be a better Whisky. However, the Duty free price is only 30 dollars less than the LCBO.
There must be something else....... Pick something you just know you can't or might not ever find here in Ontario. As always, IMHO |
