Being relatively new to single malts, I've bought a lot { to me at least } of different
malts. But have already decided that some will never be replaced.
Tamdhu & Glenrothes for example. My plan for the future, is to thin the herd
down to 6 or 8 malts with spares as required.

I've seen vids on the internet where guys are showcasing their 'Collections "
of 1000+ bottles, And it seems to be more about having every possible brand in Alphabetical order, than to actually have a clue what any one tastes like.

I know it's all personal preference, But do you more experienced types
keep buying looking for the next Holy Grail. or do you replace finished
bottles with the same label?

I like buying and trying as many different types of whisky as possible. If I stumble across something I really like then I tend to buy a few of them. My view is if you don't push the boundaries and try different expressions from different countries/distilleries then you don't know what you're missing.

I never set out to build up a collection it just happened over the years, most I intend to drink one day, one or two have gained so much value and as I have already tasted them I will probably never open and sell on one day. I am always seeking out something new which I haven't yet tried, it is part of the great pleasure of drinking Scotch single malt whisky. I do tend to stock up on limited releases which I have particularly enjoyed.

I don't collect or invest, I buy solely to drink. I usually manage to get through what I buy but sometimes I end up with a surplus which, over the years, has turned into a reasonable collection of closed bottles. My intention is that all of them will be drunk at some point, maybe years down the line.....I certainly don't have hundreds of bottles, maybe in the 20's or so closed.

I also don't really buy multiples. There are so many different whiskies out there from so many distilleries and all over the world that I'm not going to get to try them all, and I don't have unlimited cash, so I'm not going to spend my money and time on stuff I've already tried when there is so much out there that I haven't. (few exceptions to this where I've bought 2 or so bottles of a whisky).

With regards to price; I've got some stuff now that's really gone up in value well beyond what I would be prepared to spend on a replacement bottle, however the whisky is worth what I paid for it so when I drink it it'll be a Â£200 bottle and not an Â£800 bottle....because that's what I paid for it (for example). Would I rather have the extra money, or would I rather try a whisky that I'm never going to try again? Whisky every time.

I guess I can be counted in the collector sector.. I buy multiple bottles of things I like and also more top end of the distilleries I like..anything I have multiples of I will drink some now and keep at least one for future.. I do enjoy trying new expressions, more so now I have to review for my blog.. Although as a collector I don't worry about making profit, it is about future drinking.. O and I wish I had 1000 + bottles.. I'm sure there are not many with those numbers.. Collections don't need to be so massive.. I'm happy with my numbers.. Although I might have to slowdown soon 🙈

I like to collect, but am primarily a drinker. I often buy duplicates and occasionally sell on - this gives me a bit of extra whisky money to play with, which is great! I did have around 300 bottles at one stage, most of which i'd been given when I worked in the whisky/bar trade, but have whittled that down somewhat. Especially since the birth of my daughter which meant a couple of evening drams rather than meeting friends for a pint. A happy transition!

My current collection is pretty heavy on the old Ardbegs that I've collected over the years (I worked a little with them for a while) and a bunch of fun, almost exclusively cask strength offerings. I probably have about 60 open bottles from around the world; rye, bourbons, irish, Japanese, Indian and a good handful of rums and cognacs (cognac highlight is my bottle of biscuit cohiba - a grand champagne bisquit that has had cohiba cigar smoke passed through it. Sadly bisquit went bust).

Love booze. Good booze of course.
