Evening all. Just thought i would introduce myself to the Forum. I've always been a fan of Scotch Whisky, and thought i would join as i don't really know much about it, and thought it was time to learn. I'm a huge fan of the Balvenie Double Wood and Laphroaig. I have tried many others, but not enough to make an opinion on them.....yet.

A little bit about myself; i'm 27 years of age, a Aircraft Engineer for HM Royal Airforce in the UK. Currently residing in the west midlands, soon to be moving back up to bonnie scotland in the next few months. i hope to learn alot on the forums as i'm a novice when it comes to knowing anything about it at all, other than i love it!

Welcome!

Plenty of knowledge (and opinions!) on here so hopefully you'll get a lot of out the community.

At this point I'd suggest trying as many whiskies as you can from as many regions/styles as you can, you need to build up a database and points of reference/baseline and entry level whiskies are best at doing this for you. That's their purpose.

Don't be afraid to share you own opinions on whiskies or ask any questions; there are no silly questions and no-one on here bites

You will find there is a great combined knowledge amongst the SMW Forum members and I am sure they will be happy to guide you to a few very good malts.

Thanks for the welcome gents. I've been through the forum and came across a video by Richard Paterson, and i've been watching him all day on various videos on youtube, and a guy called "Ralfy" too, very good videos on different whiskies. Can't wait to start doing some tours and get some knowledge.

A word of note on other people's tasting notes; they are personal, so don't worry if you don't find any of the things that other people "claim" to find in a whisky. You take it on its own merits yourself and make your own mind up. They are good at giving you an idea of how something may taste, but that's all.....just an idea.

And I say "claim" as quite a many notes you see (and certainly in the odd vlog) are simply regurgitated from elsewhere with a bit of their own spin on - apart from on here of course, where they reflect a person's actual own experience

It is those bloggers you need to be careful off.. There are some rum folk out there..😁🤔 I'm sure Opel knows a few.. As for tasting notes.. It is the ones that list things you've never heard of that puzzle me😂😂

haha. Well i'm looking forward to tasting as much whisky as possible. My father has a good few bottles that he's had for a long time, and only has a dram once a year, so i might have to change that

Sounds like a good idea.. You should tell him you need to try them for him so you can tell him which ones are good enough for him to drink..

yeah i should. he's had alot of them for years too, he bought them when we lived in Germany around 17 years ago.
