Hello guys, new to this forum, and looking for advice Very Happy

I have 3 bottles of the whisky stated in subject and would like to sell them. My questions are :
1. I have seen them retail at £1400+, what is the realistic price I can get from a private sale / selling it to an auction house ?
2. Where is the best place to do that ?

TIA on the info !

Cheers

Hi and welcome.

Firstly, don't pay any attention to the price retailers are selling for, usually they've had to buy the bottles back and sell them so they always ask for more, mostly a lot more.

£1400 is quite ridiculous, however, these are collectable and sought after so you may get lucky and find someone with a lot of money who just wants it.

Realistically, at auction you're looking at more like £400. As I say, they are collectable so you may get more but you may get less and it all depends on who is bidding, but for arguments sake I'd think you're looking at £300 to £500 based on the day.

If you sell at auction you have to post your bottle to them, it has to be insured and you have to pay for this in advance. When you sell you then have to pay auction fees (they can be around 20% of the sale price).

So you're looking to make say £220 - £380 per bottle by the time you're all done. At a guess.

A private sale will usually be expected to be lower than an auction sale, but that can result in you getting the same as you don't have to pay auction fees. Again, it all depends on what someone is willing to pay.

Japanese whisky is going a bit mad at the moment, so it's always hard to give accurate estimates for stuff like this! Smile

Opel is on the money. Last 6 or so bottles I've seen have sold for between 450 and 600 at auction. (450@scotch whisky auctions translates to £392 after 28 days minus any shipping, reserves, etc) / A private collector might offer £400. Worth getting in touch with The Whisky Exchange or similar, though they will (generally) offer less than a private buyer. My guess, £350. Depends how quickly you want to sell.

Thanks for the advice guys, I appreciate the warm welcome.

I really though I could get more cash out of it, but well, such is life.

I might as well drink it ! Very Happy

Try asking Hard to Find Whisky and Master of Malt for an appraisal, once auction fees are taken into account their prices don't appear to be too wide of the mark.

Hard To Find Whiskey, I would stay away from they prefer you to state what you want for the bottle always found them unhelpful unlike The Whiskey Exchange who I can't moan about.

I have had the complete opposite experience, got a really good price for a bottle of Karuizawa from Hard To Find Whisky unlike Whisky Exchange who just pointed me in the direction of their auction site Whisky Auction.
