New to the forum, in fact, fairly new to drinking whisky! (only started just before last Christmas).
I'm slowly developing my tastebuds for Whisky having abstained from it adter tasting something quite nasty when I was 17 (I'm not 43). I started with Monky Shoulder as an entry in 'decent' Whisky and I'm lucky enough to have a partner that really knows her Whiskies as her job required it a few years ago.
I'm wondering what average priced Whisky people always have in their collections, the go to favorites as it were. I understand that this is a very subjective thing but I'm still casting nets for different ones to try at this stage so I'm open to any suggestions. |

I assume you are looking for some ideas for decent whiskies you haven't yet tried and that don't put a big dent in the bank balance.
Some whiskies which are always in my cupboard are Glenfiddich 15, Talisker 10, Ardbeg 10, Laphroaig 10, Dalwhinnie 15, Glenfarclas 15, Glenmorangie 10, Highland Park 12, Balvenie 12 Doublewood |

The Glenlivet Nadurra First Fill Selection
Lagavulin 16

So that gives some ideas of my experience, which actually looks like quite a lot now that I list it! |

For Blends:
Monkey Shoulder
JW The Spice Road
Nikka From the Barrel (I belive that this a blend)
Single Malts:
Glen Garioch 1997 (actually the second bottle of Whisky I had - first foot present on NYD this year from my better half)
Lagavulin 16 - I tried a dram of this with friend, it was the first peated Whisky I've liked and it's cheap in Costco at the minute so I snapped a bottle up. This is also why I bought the Talisker 10 which is nice but not quite as nice as the Laguvulin 16.
I'm finding that initially I liked whiskies with a sweeter angle, but as my palate is developign I'm getting into more challenging whiskies such as the Islays. I was lucky enough to go to Edradour and Aberfeldy for my birthday in July hence those whiskies being present. I'm also keenly aware that there are some whiskies that are absolutely fine but (to my palate, unremarkable) such as the Old Pultney 12 which I did enjoy but I doubt I'd buy again as it was almost forgettable so polished was it. |

| Looks like you don't need much help then! My list of regular whiskies is pretty similar to Blakey's, except no Dalwhinnie for me and even though I like Highland Park I don't get it that often. Some of my other regular bottles are Glencadam 10, Springbank 12, Benromach 10, Benriach 17 Septendecim and any affordable Balblair. |

I always have bottles from
Auchentoshan
Glenfarclas
Glendronach
Balvenie
Glenfiddich
Ancnoc
And Tomatin open.
The bottles might vary from time to time but are generally core range.. I also have single barrel options for most.. But I'm lucky enough to have a couple of other options if I fancy something different .. |

I forgot to say - if you love Lagavulin 16, I'd also recommend any and all of the following:
Ardbeg (10, Uigeadail and Corryvreckan)
Laphroaig (10 and Quarter Cask)
Caol Ila 12
Kilchoman Machir Bay
Port Charlotte Scottish Barley
Ledaig 10
Benriach 17 Septendecim |

Ardbeg 10 is on my list to try but that's just the kind of thing I was looking for thanks. Interestingly, I went to a Whisky festival in March and the only one I poured away was Laphroaig (not sure what variant it was). It was the last one of the evening and I just think it was too much of a shock to the taste buds at the time. Think I'll find a decent bar to try that one in. |
