As you can see from my previous post here:
http://www.scotchmaltwhisky.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6133
I'm relatively new to Whisky drinking, although I'm fascinated by it and learning more on a daily basis.
However I'm now looking for something really special to buy and keep to celebrate in the future, no I'm not interested in investing - this will most definitely be drank at some point.
Price wise I'm open from up to a couple of hundred of pounds so this could be two good bottles or one great one perhaps?
So, what do people suggest? as starting point I've been considering is Glenmorangie 18yr old or possibly Glenmorangie Signet. I do like Laguvulin 16 very much, as well as enjoying The Glenlivet Nadurra.
I'm willing to try something new as I love the voyage of discovery that each new Whisky I try brings but I want this to be memorable. |

Get ready for a barrage of suggestions.. What is your location ?
You have up to £200 to spend on something special .. If this was me spending the money I would look at
Glenfarclas 1991 family cask ( whisky shop Dufftown exclusive) £200 ish delivered
Glendronach 1994 oloroso cask around £120-135 ( or any other vintages around this age)
1990 balblair £100 ish
But you could go down the line of
Lagavulin 8yo + 16 distillers = £120 ish
Glenfarclas 25 + lagavulin 8yo |

£200 is fairly sizable budget and you could pick up all kinds of combinations with that sort of money, all depends what your tastes are and what you consider special to be...
You've suggested a couple of Highland malts in the Glenmorangie's and there is nothing wrong with that, if you fancy something a bit more characterful than Glenfarclas tends to offer good value and and as Sorren suggests you could do a lot worse than one of their family cask's.
Staying in the Highland region a well aged Glengoyne might be something you'd like or a single cask Glendronach (one of my favourite distilleries and you could get a couple of bottles for your budget), or if you fancy venturing to Islay then a Bruichladdich Black Art or well aged Bunnahabhain could fit the bill.
Also don't discount good Single Grain whiskies either, I've recently been enjoying a 43yo 1972 Invergordon which was superb and at £70 a bottle much better value than some single malts I've had...
Whatever you decide, just enjoy it |

One of the best whiskies I've had in quite some time was a Balblair 1983 (30 year old). It was amongst a high end Inver House session and by far the best of the night. So good I got a bottle straight after.
Usually it's £210 but I've seen it on Amazon every now and the for £150, which is a steal. Limited too so when it's gone it's gone. _________________ "Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whisky is barely enough." |

I was about to recommend this without even having tried it, based purely on the strength of the other Balblairs I've had, both young and old. I was born in 1983 so I got a bottle from Amazon when it was on sale, to be opened on my birthday later in the year. |

Also born in 83 myself, it was a good year (apart from all those distilleries closing).

A few that I would happily buy knowing they are special drams are:
Glen Ord 28 year old
Dalwhinnie 1987 25 year old Special Release 2012
Glencadam 21 year old
Glengoyne 21 year old or better still if you can stretch the budget the Glengoyne 25 |

100% agree with the Glenfarcas Single Cask, it's so far the best money I have spent on a whisky.
I got a Glengoyne 25 a few months back for £230 what really isn't that bad, considering its 25 years old 48% and absoluetly amazing. Ben Nevis make some
Lovely single cask whiskys for about 130/180, had the port cask. Lovely stuff
Also don't count out the Inderpendent bottlers, Creative Whisky Company, Douglas/Hunter Laing , Master of Malt all do some really well
Priced single casks. |

Some great suggestions here, I've not had many Balblairs but did try the 1990 at an Inverhouse tasting last year and it was very good, would love to try the 1983 |

Some great suggestions here. I'm in the North East England.
I think on balance I might aim for a couple of £100 (ish) bottles but I'm going to have a look trhough the suggestions. Is buying Whisky from Amazon generally regarded as low risk? |

Amazon is usually ok, you should look at Master of Malt and The Whisky Exchange too |

Amazon are great, they sell direct as well as via marketplace. If you get from Amazon direct/themselves (such as the Balblair 83) then it's free delivery over £20. I've only had 1 issue with a leak and that was due to the bottle design and not Amazon, they sent me a replacement at no cost and told me to keep the original too.
Personally I use master of malt or The Whisky Exchange most due to price but amazon have some great deals from time to time. I got a bottle of Appleton Estate 21yo rum from them a few months back for £75 on offer where it's usually between £120 and £140...... _________________ "Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whisky is barely enough." |

Glenlivet XXV
Glenmorangie Signet
Highland Park 25
These get my vote.
I'm still looking for a Highland Park 25. Damn near unobtainium in Ontario. |
