Just thought I'd see what people think of the NAS craze by whisky distilleries. Is This just a money maker?? Distilleries being lazy???

For me personally I don't mind as I don't always look at the age of a whisky before I buy one but I do think it's allowed distilleries to bring out whiskies that aren't maybe ready and charge more
Any thought????

Personally I believe we are being ripped off. I have been buying up age statement
Whisky's like there is no tomorrow, while the wife just sits there and gives me stink eye.

I think its just a money maker for them. Prefer to see the age and dont go for these nas which will become the stock in trade with age being at a premium

NAS whisky is ok to a point. If the distillery is willing to include the age of whiskys on the label I'm fine with it. Or like Glenmorangie with Signet. They have said some of the Whisky used is 35 plus years old. Just give us something so we can decide if the Whisky MIGHT be worth the money they are asking.

There are some superb premium NAS whiskies around but I disagree with the new host of NAS entry level whiskies which every brand appears to have now. These NAS entry level whiskies are often priced above the previous aged entry level whisky but are not the same quality and are often more expensive but this is just part of the marketing game of marking products up then offering amazing discounts to generate sales at busy times of year such as Christmas. The young NAS entry level whiskies are usually easy drinking crowd pleasers and often there is very little other choice in many high street supermarkets..

These entry level NAS whiskies are simply a result of big whisky companies greed for money, I hope it comes back to shoot them in the foot.

AGE MATTERS - TO THE PRICE!

They can be as creative with cask selection and cask finishes as they like but if a whisky is only 8 years old or less then it should be priced as a whisky of that age

Well age doesn't mean price. Rarity means price.

What they do with these NAS bottling is limit them as "special" releases. This means they are finite and therefore rare compared to core range bottlings. As such they can demand a higher price.

They're just deliberately limiting stock of these to artificially inflate the price. Does it mean they are worth the price? Depends on the drinkers. For me, generally not. One of the reasons I've not bought any whisky since February.

In principle I don't have an issue with NAS but it would be nice if there was some transparency about what age range is in the bottle.

When you think about it, NAS is a very logical way to sell a product - you're selling your brand and stating that you think that the quality is good enough then adding (creative!) tasting notes. That should really be enough when it comes down to it.

NAS has been around a while and some of your more expensive Scotches are NAS. For example, The Macallan 25th Anniversary Scotches are NAS and they came out a long, long time ago. I've had four different releases of The Macallan 25th Anniversary and all four were among the best Scotches that I have ever tasted.

That said, I generally prefer an age statement.
