The Tomintoul Distillery is located within the Glenlivet estate, in the whisky region of Speyside. The distillery is named after the nearby village of Tomintoul which is the highest village in the Highlands of Scotland. The distillery was founded in 1964 by the Glasgow whisky traders Hey & Macleod and W. and S. Strong. Today the distillery still uses the traditional techniques that stretch back hundreds of years to make the single malt, know as “the gentle dram”.
Todays review is the Five decades bottling which is a celebration off the fiftieth anniversary for the first spirit that flowed from the stills.. This expression comprises of casks from 1965, 1975, 1985, 1995 and 2005.. Master distiller, Robert Flemming personally selected the casks used for this release.

Bottled at 50% abv with natural colour.
Nose.. Quite spicy and tropical at first, lots of toffee and vanilla with a touch of dark fruits and rich chocolate.. A touch of oak and subtle earthy notes mingle in the background.
Palate.. Baked pear, burnt oranges and caramelised banana with rich honey and a toffee sauce, hints of oak and sugared almonds with more chocolate and a lovely richness that coats the mouth..
Finish.. Spiced with a twist of oak and fruit.
Thoughts.. This is a rather elegant dram, lots of complexity and big flavours balanced ever so well with delicate subtle notes.. From the minute you pour to the very last sip this dram engulfs your imagination.. It takes you on a journey and makes you feel rather special..
