Whisky Forum - How much to pour?

When having a drink I usually pour a 45ml amount. Wondering what others pour especially if they are evaluating a scotch for the first few times? Better to go closer to a double (60ml)?

First few drams I have new out of the bottle are between 10/15 ML. Regularly I pour between 25/30 MLs

I don't really measure it, just pour it into my Glencairn about 2/3's of the way up the bowl. It's not quite a double so probably closer to your 45ml amount I'd guess.

If your using a tulip glass like a Glencairn or a Copita then it's the opposite for a new try. You don't want to over fill as you won't be able to give it a little swirl without the risk of loosing juice. You want surface area and all that for letting it breathe and for nosing. Needs room to let the volatiles be volatile.

Ideally for a tasting and review I prefer 30ml. Rarer drams are often offered at 15-20 ml portions particularly at pubs that offer the rarer drams in a flight. Regarding simply having a drink at home, I think I would say I vary from 30ml to 40 ml. Though there are exceptions at times.

I prefer tasting few different malts per day. Pour about 25ml, 2-3 drams a day.

For me is important to pour exact amount all the times because I know how much water different expressions need (drinking mostly cask strength malts).

Depends whether I am sticking to one whisky or enjoying a few, no more than 75ml - 100ml total in a day.

I mostly pour 20mls into a glencairn although having picked some mini ones up at a distillery last year, I am using two quite a lot either with same whisky and different amounts of water/one without and one with! Or two different drams drunk over a couple of hours..fun to play to get different nose and tastes... Oh and every day just one!

I buy a few minitures which is a double so once you learn where it sits in your glass then the jobs a good one so that's my pour.
