I realise these tasting notes are not very useful as they're for a hand-filled bottle from a cask that's long gone, but I've been really enjoying it so wanted to write down some words.
Glengoyne 2004 cask 31. Refill bourbon, bottled 2016 at 59.1% ABV.
Colour: Light gold.
Nose: Citrus fruits, unripe apples, barley (if that makes sense!), subtle vanilla in the background.
Palate: Quite austere at first on apples and mild spices. Spirit-driven. With time, it opens up. Shortbread, some vanilla, sweet apples counteract the austere notes very well.
Finish: Quite long, drying, touch of bitterness.
Comments: Young, fresh, vibrant but not immature, this reminds me of the Balvenie 12 Single Barrel. The Balvenie is First Fill while this Glengoyne is from a refill cask, but they share a lot of characteristics - classy spirits matured in quality casks that 'stay out of the way'.
If I was marking it I'd give it 87 or 88 from 100.

Sounds like you enjoyed it Alex. Pretty solid score. The abv with this one would be very appealing. Cheers. _________________ "Always carry a large flagon of whisky in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake."

| Thanks Murray, I've been enjoying this over the summer mostly, it was my go to summertime dram along with the Balblair 2005, Glencadam 10 and Balvenie 12 Single Barrel. Glengoyne normally get credit for their older sherried whiskies mostly, but I really enjoy the house style at cask strength when the distillate does most of the talking. |
