Balvenie Tun 1509 Batch 3 - I'm having a really hard time finding any Reviews online for this one besides the Initial one post from this site. And I'm not sure why!

I've had a bottle of this myself and found it better than both Batch 1 and 2, and almost touching some of the lower marked 1401's scores (almost but not quite).

Basically I really enjoyed it and I was just wondering if other People shared my opinion because it's itching at me for some reason. Probably because it cost an arm + a leg.

I had a bottle and thought the Tun 1509 Batch 3 was superb. I do like to read a reviews before splashing out on the more expensive stuff but you don't tend to get a lot of reviews of the higher end whiskies. I bought a bottle after reading Williams review on here http://www.scotchmaltwhisky.co.uk/balvenietun1509batch3.htm which I can say was spot on and worthy of the high rating he gave it. It will probably be in the new Whisky Bible 2017 which should be out soon.

I have been trying hard to procure a bottle. I have been unable to locate one.

I refuse to pay the 526.00 plus pounds the LCBO wants for it.

They are $580CAD here in Calgary, and relatively plentiful ( I can think of 3-4 stores that I know has stock as of a couple weeks ago) if you are ever in this part of the country.

600.00 Cdn is still way over priced. That's 371.00 pounds equivalent.

Saw Serge reviewed it too now, I was quite surprised that while he found it good he Ranked it under both the 1509 batch 1 and 2.

What's Even more worrying is that he didn't rate the Balvenie 1401 batch 7 in the 90's which he did with both the batch 5 and 8.

I had batch 8 a few years ago which was great and my Family (through my advice) just decided to all Chip in and buy a batch 7 instead of batch 5 the other day for a Family celebration because it was cheaper and also had good Reviews from what I could find...Sods law hey. Lets see if he was right.

Link to the review?

Now having had all three. it's not even close. Batch 3 is by far the better of the three.

Sorry Fightingirish I have no glue how to Link it, I try and learn that

If you go to Whiskyfun.com now it's still on Front Page, you Need to scroll down a bit to 26th October..and there are the Batch 1401 batch 8&7 and 1509 batch 3 Reviews.

He says that batch 8 was the Last of 1401 which is wrong, because there is the fantastic batch 9 which is secondly only to the batch 3. Can't See a way to tell him that though...

I have a bottle which I plan on opening over the Christmas holidays. I have also recently had the chance to taste it thanks to a friend and I can say that I think it is an superb Balvenie, the reviews rating it highly are correct IMO.

I found it. Here is the best part if his review. I'm guessing math wasn't one of his strong points. Lol

" this baby ‘is comprised of 12 sherry butts, 11 American oak hogsheads and 8 refill American-oak butts, all containing whisky distilled between 1989 and 1993’. So, this is a 22 or 23 years old, hope the SWA does not read little WF. Hello? Colour: amber. Nose: it’s younger and simpler than the 1401s, one can feel that there isn’t any old whisky inside. Yeah, oldness starts at 25 with whisky, in my opinion –"

So 11 oak hogsheads are 1989 ( 27 years old) and and 12 Sherry butts between 1989-1992 ( 24-27 years old) and 8 refill American oak butts between 1992-1993 ( 23-24 years old )

I think it's safe to say the avg age is 25-26 years old.

Sometimes I have felt Whiskyfun.com picks fault with a whisky when there is none.

Williams review on here does refer to it as mature which I would very much agree with, I have only had a few drams from my bottle so far and in my opinion it is superb.

Bookie I see Jim Murray hasn't reviewed the Tun 1509 batch 3 in the new 2017 Whisky Bible, I suspect he is no longer on the William Grant mailing list.

I agree, sometimes Serge seems to find faults which for me simply aren't there. But then whisky can be very subjective and I guess, like all of us, he knows what HE likes...which is OK.

I seriously don't know how he actually manages to taste so many whiskys.

All I know is I finished the Balvenie 1509 batch 3 off last night (now who's drinking too much ..) and it was the best non-peated whisky I've tasted this year. Now onto the 1401 batch 7 ..
