As it's cooling off I'm in the mood for something a bit heavier to match the season. Looking for a suggestion in the 12 to 18yr range that would be rich in flavor and lightly peated/smoky. Would any of these fit the bill since they are available locally and haven't tried before:

Bunnahabhain 12
Bunnahabhain ceobanch
Glenfiddich malt masters edition
Dalwhinnie distillers edition
Oban distillers edition
Glenfarclas 12yr Lorne Scott's edition

And of course open to other popular malts if you have a suggestion!

Thanks all

Cross off the Bunnahabhain 12 , Glenfiddich malt masters edition, Dalwhinnie and Glenfarclas as none of those are peated.

I would go with a HP12 or HP 18.

Good to know thanks! I have hp12 at home and that is what sparked my interest once again with a peated Scotch. Have had the 18 too. Any others in our province with similar characteristics? As you know it's not easy to find stock especially outside Toronto.

It's been awhile, but I remember the Oban 14 being a good solid choice

Not sure if these will be heaver peated than you are looking for but I would consider them a step up in peat level from the likes of Highland Park but still not peat monsters. These are all quality drams and worth looking out for:

Caol Ila 12 year old
Talisker 10 year old
Benriach 10 year old Curiositas Peated

Really like Talisker 10. Even more so the 18. The other two aren't in my local area. Would have loved to try the Caol!

Dalwhinnie isn't 'peated' per se but it's smokey indeed, lightly so and wonderful.

I second Benromach 10. You could try another plated Spey such as some of the other Benriach peated malts.

Anything from Springbank or Kilkerran.

If you fancy something a bit different and interesting you could go for a Clynelish 14yo. Cracking official bottling, not expensive and has a lot of good flavour

Guys. Keep in mind he lives in the People's Republic of Ontario as I do. Much of the fine malts available to you gents are never available here.

*sigh*

Indeed. Even more frustrating is the inconsistent inventory between large cities!

Smoky would work too doest have to be peated per se.

I was keeping that in mind when making my suggestions, I have family who live in Ontario and do realise that many whiskies are not available there. I assumed most if not all of the whiskies I mentioned would be available in Ontario

Only the Arran and Bunnahabhain Ceobanach are available here.

The *sigh* was for us having to buy from the LCBO.

I've had it in bars previously and was undecided whether I liked it.
Ended up going with this. So far it's pretty good - hoping it opens up a little after uncorking. Definitely pulls in a few different directions.

Thanks again

I am very surprised you don't at least have the Benromach 10 year old in Ontario, I think I would have to relocate I lived there Smile

So I'm thinking of picking up the Bowmore darkest 15yr again. Really enjoyed it. Is there anything else with a similar smoke/peat profile? Doesn't have to be sherried it could be a Bourbon based one. Maybe Uigeadail or similar?
