Now here's something you may have never heard before.
After an extended period of not drinking Scotch (for private reasons), I have been taking a dram or two lately and seem to have lost my taste!!
Before now, I loved them all. Can't think of a flavor profile that I didn't like, but most certainly preferred the Islays to them all. Now what? Seems I need to start all over. Need to rekindle my love affair with scotch.
Suggestions? Sad

When you say you lost your taste, what exactly do you mean? Are you just getting "whisky burn", do they all taste the same or are they all processed as undesirable?

Appreciate the prompt reply friend. I believe it is a little of both.
Went first for the HP12, remembering it was my first love and made me venture to the Laphroaigs and Ardbegs. But even the HP wasn't pleasant to me.
Ever heard of this?

The only times I ever heard of something like this, the culprit was a change in the taste buds or alternatively in olfactory processing (sense of smell) based on being on meds that affected these senses or tooth or nasal problems. I would suggest trying the sweeter, fruity drams, Highland drams like Glenmo the Original for example or perhaps some fruity Speysides or even a fruity Scottish blend to test the waters.

When I become interested in single malts (many moons ago), I was exclusively drinking Islay/Island malts (Talisker was my favourite). But for the last 7-8 years I’m drinking mostly un-peated stuff. In the time of transition I started to take different medicaments - probably that’s the reason for the change (or my palate finally recognised that peat is covering all that subtitle aromas from the distillation and wood Surprised)
… give time a chance and listen to your body.

I did have some medical problems, and yes, it may be the culprit.
Good advice fromantic both responders. Thanks.
I do remember the very first dram I actually enjoyed . . . It was Macallan 12.
Maybe. . . ?

I second the advice of listen to your body. Maybe scotch isn't the thing for you at this moment right now? Taste changes over time. 20 years ago I drank peaty Islays regularly, then didn't really enjoy whisky again until last year when I rediscovered my love for it.

It's your choice in the end, you don't *have* to drink anything. Thankfully there are lots of other options alcohol-wise, but I do appreciate your situation. Take it easy and let it come. If the fire was there before it can be there again Cool

I agree 100%. Medicines can and often will mess with your taste buds and your sense of smell.

Certain foods can also screw up the taste of Scotch. For example, I enjoy eating Mexican dishes occasionally but when I do eat Mexican dishes I find that I don't enjoy Scotch for about 24 hours. The Mexican spices have screwed my taste buds.

Good luck! I can't imagine not enjoying a good Scotch.
