Hi, sorry for being one of those people that turn up and immediately asks a question.
But
Has anyone seen one of these before and could offer an estimate of price? I picked it up this week and though I'm keeping and will use it I'm curious of it's value. I can't find anything similar online.
Thanks in advance. |

| I have seen a similar Glen Garioch crystal decanter and glass set, I don't think they ever contained whisky they are simply Glen Garioch merchandise with the distillery name on it. The sort of thing you may find on sale in the distillery shop. |

| A few empty distillery crystal decanters have sold at whisky auctions over the years and typically make between £35-£45. They always look like they're worth a lot more but decanters aren't in fashion these days. Last time I saw some in local charity shops they were £15-£20 (without any distillery name). |

| Thank you both for the replies. I'd guessed that it was a 'bought empty' decanter. I picked it up for £10 so not a huge amount. Is there a problem keeping whisky in a Chrystal decanter? |

None that I know in the short term and it's nice to use it as designed rather than hidden away. But I wouldn't open a bottle of whisky that has a cork to put it in a decanter if it was going to take me a long time to consume it (see "How long does Scotch keep after opening?" thread). Chances are the cork will do a better job than the decanter's stopper at keeping the air out resulting in oxidation. If you think you'll drink the whisky in the decanter within a month or two then it should be fine. |

I like that decanter. It is a cool find.
I have an expensive decanter that someone gave me. It has held brandy a long, long time. (I don't often drink brandy.) Is a decanter as good as or better than a corked bottle? I wouldn't know but I prefer to keep my Scotch in the original bottles.
Still . . . that's a nice decanter. |

| I wouldn't keep whisky or any spirit I intend to drink in a lead crystal decanter long term, apart from the fact it is lead crystal, they are not really sealed well at all with a crystal stopper and they tend to have a lot of air space in the decanter which can accelerate the loss of a whisky's character. The only plus side of a crystal decanter is they look good, but personally I prefer to see the bottle the whisky originated from and read the what details are on the label. |
