The folks in the marketing department at independent Glasgow based whisky bottlers have been busy once again coming up with something to attract our hard earned whisky pounds, the company today unveiled the first limited edition series within their Old Particular single cask range, the Old Particular Consortium of Cards Collection.
More about the collection and the first release in the collection, a Laphroaig 18 Year Old Queen of the Hebrides here:

I would guess 4 whiskies regions so we will see an Ace from each region so my guesses would be based on my experience of Douglas Laing::
Lowland Ace - Auchentoshan
Islay Ace - Bowmore
Speyside Ace - Tomintoul
Highland Ace - Tomatin |

My predictions are more along the lines of what I would hope for as the Aces, at there best these distilleries can be superb
Islay Ace - Ardbeg
Speyside Ace - Glendronach
Highland Ace - Highland Park (as there is no Island region in this prediction I have include it in the Highland region.)
Lowland Ace - Auchentoshan |

I wonder how much Port Ellen Douglas Laing have still in their warehouse, but as Whisky Dog says it is probably now reserved for their premium ranges. I am surprised no other Scotch has done this pack of cards thing before now I recall one of the Japanese whiskies doing it a few years back, the name escapes me at the moment.
I wouldn't mind an Ace, King, Jack and Ten from Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Caol Ila and Bowmore to go with the Queen from Laphroaig. |

Luckily no other distillery has done a playing card series of whiskies to massively bump up the price of the bottlings and specifically target collectors.

| I would hope the prices are the same as the standard label Old Particular, if so this is a harmless move by a DL to get there whiskies noticed on the shelves of the whisky shops. It does nothing for me as I don't see the Old Particular brand as being collectable it is the particular whisky in the bottle that determines what is collectable and desirable for me. |

Is this a fair price for a Laphroaig 18yo? |
Hah, no way! Last year 18yo OB was available for 61€ (=50£).
This trend looks serious Luckily I can vote with my wallet. |

It is certainly a bit of a mark up on a standard Old Particular Laphroaig 18, here is an example of a bottle available at TWE for £125

You can certainly still get whiskies from the independents bottled at different ages and strengths but there pricing doesn't offer much of an incentive to choose them over original bottlings and in my experience indie bottlings have always been hit or miss but I took the chance as they were priced less than the original distillery bottlings. When they get to greedy like this their whisky can collect dust as far as I am concerned, this is a ridiculous price for a Laphroaig 18 indie bottling. |

I know. That why I stated "last year".
So price is 150% up in one year... 60€ OB was a bargain but 160€ IB is a rip off IMHO. |

I think the point I was trying to make is that to get an OB 18yo now will cost you very close to if not more than what DL is asking for their new bottling - I'm not saying it's right it's just the current market... |
