The Glenmorangie Bacalta is the latest release in the Private Edition series, it was finished in Malmsey Madeira casks.
More info and tasting note for the new Glenmorangie Bacalta here:

| I will look forward to your review of the Bacalta William. I noticed last years Milsean hasn't sold out yet, not sure if buyers are staying away perhaps due to the price of these now or if the numbers released are a lot more than earlier Private Edition releases as the Milsean is an excellent whisky, I still have a couple of bottles in the cupboard. |

Charlie regards the Milsean not selling out yet it is probably a bit of both price and bottle numbers.
No doubt I will have a bottle of the new Bacalta and perhaps more if it is good.
William I do recall the Madeira Wood Finish, as you say it was ok but not the greatest, I will be interested to read what you say about the new Bacalta |

The Bacalta sounds interesting and as we know these don't sell out over night I will await the reviews.
I wish they would do a 2nd release of the Glenmorangie Sonnalta, I would have a few bottles of that. |

is it just me or did everyone understand the official tasting note when it says:
| Quote: | | A little water brings out a classic ‘rancio’/aged Balsamic tone |
After a browse in Google I found that the word Rancio is used to describe a certain flavour found in brown, wood-aged and heated fortified wines, for example the Madeira. It relates to the nutty flavour peculiar to some fortified wines such as sherry and Madeira.
Just thought I would share my findings in case there are other non wine drinkers like myself not familiar with the term.
William I do recall the Glenmorangie Madeira Wood Finish you mention, it was very candy sweet, I enjoyed it.

It's literal translation is "rancid" and it can also lead to mushroom'y, earthy, forest floor smells. You get it a lot in good, well matured sherry cask/finish whiskies mainly.

I do sometimes find official whisky tasting notes can be overly pretentious especially the higher up the price scale you go, the more pompous the notes can get. Don't get me wrong the official note for the new Glenmorangie Bacalta is quite descriptive, for me a good tasting note should describe the flavours found in the whisky and the intensity of those flavours and it should also score a whisky for quality if reviewing the whisky.
I do love the Glenfiddich 19 Age Of Discovery Madeira Cask Finish so if the new Glenmorangie Bacalta can match it for quality I shall certainly have a bottle or 2, hopefully there is a good portion of mature whisky in the Bacalta. |

| Cheers for your thoughts on this William, sounds like what I would have expected, any thoughts on its age? I have now ordered a bottle now. |

| My bottle was delivered yesterday and I tried a dram last night. I like it! But then I like most Scotches finished in Maderia casks. |

| Got a bottle of the Bacalta at the weekend, William you have summed it up better than I probably could and I very much agree with your rating of it. |
