SWA Welcomes European Commission's Proposals On Labelling

The European Commission has adopted a report on the mandatory labelling of the list of ingredients and the nutrition declaration for alcoholic beverages. Following the conclusions of the report, the Commission has invited the alcoholic beverages' industry to develop, within a year, a self-regulatory proposal aiming to provide information on ingredients and nutrition of all alcoholic beverages.

Interesting development William. I also wonder about them having to disclose caramel coloring which some aficionados frown on in single malts.

It would be great to see the whisky industry forced to add a caramel colouring statement to every bottle if it contains it, we may then see its wide spread use in single malts reduced.

I would expect e150a to be declared; under these rules it an ingredient and must be listed, just like food colouring is listed on food. Win for geeks.


Interestingly, this applies to "alcoholic beverages" so I'm looking forward to seeing how this will impact rum as there are a fair few rogues out there adding sugar etc. I wonder how this will effect flavored vodkas etc too....

....whichever way it effects them, it's transparency and must be applauded. May not last too long though, once we leave the EU.
