Hi there. This is my first post. here. I am a whisky drinker and whisky lover.
My mother-in-law has given me an old bottle of Haig Dimple Pinch. It is boxed and unopened and was probably bought back from a visit to the States my late father-in-law made in the 70's or early 80's. It is 15 year old, 43% proof, 75 cl.
My quandary is, do I open it. I am concerned that I will open it and find that has deteriorated. _________________ Never do today what you can put off till tomorrow. |

Hi there,
Only one way to find out! The contents should be fine, the main worry would be how it was stored. If stored upright and out of the sun then I'd hope it would be fine. There is a possibility that the seal may not have lasted well - you can tell by the fill level (is it a full bottle or has some evaporated?). This would lead to lower ABV and will affect the taste experience.
The cork may have also degraded so if you do open it you may have to fish bits out, apart from that crack it open and let us know how you get on! |

It has been stored in a dark cupboard, away from heating but protected from frost. It has been standing upright for the entire time, as far as I am aware.
It looks like it is a screw top bottle but hard to tell. It is full right up into the neck.
I think I may try it this coming weekend. Who dares, wins! _________________ Never do today what you can put off till tomorrow. |

| Welcome to the SMW forum Jocko. I think it should be fine and I would think it will be a screw top. Open it and raise a glass to your late father-in-law and enjoy. |

Sitting with a glass in my hand at the moment and it is excellent. Just a spot of water in it. I was obviously not meant to drink it as I spilt half the first glass over the worktop. Amazing how quickly you can grab and right a glass of whisky! _________________ Never do today what you can put off till tomorrow. |

I had a mate who worked in a bottling plant in Glasgow. He was a whisky lover (he got me started on Laphroaig), and loved the smell of his work. However, he said it was the worst job in the world to go into with a hangover!
Talking of hangovers, I woke up with a splitting sore head this morning, just like a hangover head. And I only had the one last night, albeit a large one. Maybe a legacy of 40 years in the bottle. I'll see how I get on the next time I have a snifter. _________________ Never do today what you can put off till tomorrow. |
