|
|
| I've had 3 different scotches so far, and i'm looking for recommendations for others to try. I've had the Talisker 18, Glenlivet 15, and The Balvenie Double Wood 12. The Balvenie seemed a little too sweet and lacking the complexity of the others, especially the Glenlivet. The Talisker's smokiness was a bit overpowering for me. And the Glenlivet 15 i liked a lot, but the peppery finish was a little much. It wouldn't be the end of the world if i just stuck with Glenlivet 15 for the rest of my life, but being relatively new to this I'm more tempted to keep trying new scotches. The Glenlivet 18's description on master of malt sounded appealing, although thats starting to get pretty high in price. Particularly the walnut described in the palate seemed interesting, and i was wondering if there are maybe more affordable ones with walnut in the palate. i was also thinking of trying one with more smoke flavor than the Glenlivet, but less than the Talisker 18. |

Sounds to me like you are looking to stay around the Speyside and Highland regions at the moment, as the descriptors you are looking for are found it many of the mid-age Spey's.
Ones I can recomment:
Glenfarclas 15yo (a little smoky but mainly from the casking)
Glenfiddich 15yo Distillery Edition
Aberlour A'Bunadh
GlenDronach 12to
Clynelish 14yo
Glengoyne 15yo
Maybe something like an anCnoc vintage release, 2001 etc _________________ "Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whisky is barely enough." |

Dalwhinnie 15
Aberfeldy 12
Oban 14
Old Pulteney 12
Benromach 10
Highland Park 12
Glenfiddich 15 |

thank you so much the suggestions!
i think in particular Old Pulteney 12 and Clynelish 14 look appealing and I'm going to have to give a try. Maybe Dalwinnie 15, Highland Park 12, and Glengoyne 15 eventually as well. |

It sounds like you prefer the sherried flavours, but a milder flavour (Glenlivet 15 is very "soft" on the palate and an easy-drinking whisky). I would recommend Glendronach 12 or Aberlour 10 or Aberlour 12 then.
Dalwhinnie 15 is more honey and quite straightforward, more like the Balvenie.
Highland Park 12 is smoky so you may find it offensive and off-putting if you didn't like Talisker.
Amrut Fusion is Indian single malt but it has that walnut note in it. It will taste a bit harsher than the Glenlivet 15 but it carries malty, sweet, cocoa and nut notes. |

i'll make sure to try an Aberlour
yeah, IDK how smoky Talisker is for a smoky scotch. My understanding is Highland Park 12 is just a little smoky, so maybe it will be a better introduction into smoky scotches? Highland Park 12 also just seems like such a reputable and affordable scotch that i feel like i should try it.
I live in Michigan so retailers have to buy scotches from the state, so there is certainly a limited number of them. I ordered a Old Pulteney 12 from a local store, but looks like Clynelish 14 is unbuyable, as well as aberlour 10. will have to get Aberlour 12, and looks like Glendronach 12 is available as well. |
