Whisky Forum - Tasted black label earlier,was quite different from expected

New to drinking whisky here...just had a dram of black label. After reading its tasting notes from whiskyexchange I thought I would get spicy notes with a hint of vanilla. Instead I ytasted salt, brine and bitterness. There's smoky finish that's very pleasant l but otherwise it was unexpected. Not sure if I like it, for comparison I had monkey shoulder before, in an old fashioned, it doesn't really count but still it was whisky. I liked it better than the black label though, not sure what that signifies

I seldom if ever agree or even find evidence of the tasting notes when I enjoy whisky. I don't appear to have the most perceptive of palates...

FWIW I too prefer Moneky Shoulder to Black Label

Everyone's personal taste and preference differs, I don't worry about what others taste as long as I enjoy it..

It does sound like you may enjoy a sweet peaty whisky and I am sure you would enjoy a Speyside style whisky.

I am sure you would enjoy whiskies from Glen Grant such as their 10 and 12 year olds or perhaps the Aultmore 12 year old.

Thank you for all your suggestions. I also didn't smell much from black label except wood..maybe I just need time to develop my senses. Looking back this wasn't the first time I had whisky for its taste. My first was a gifted grand old parr, back when I was 17. Had to sneak it from my dad heh Smile

. That whisky was sweet and very nice

I wish I still could get my hands on it..they don't have it here (I live in asia).

The type of glass you drink from can make a big difference to your enjoyment of a whisky., if you haven't got a whisky glass such as a Glencairn whisky glass or copita type tasting glass it would be worth getting one or any tulip shaped glass that will concentrate the aromas and flavours of the whisky.

Your post certainly demonstrates how peoples tastes differ, I personally think the Johnnie Walker 12 Black Label is a excellent blended Scotch.

Many people slate jw blends but to me I think they are top notch, had the gold last night and enjoyed it, the green is my fav so far. And the 12 black well there's nothing wrong with it at all.
