Jim Murray has named an American Bourbon whiskey, Colonel EH Taylor Four Grain, as his World Whisky Of The Year in the latest edition of his Whisky Bible
In 2nd place was the Irish Single Pot Still Redbreast 21 Year Old
Taking third place was last years runner up, the Glen Grant 18 Year Old.

| I have to agree with Jims award for the Redbreast 21, it really is a brilliant pot still whiskey but the price is getting harder to swallow now, it was around £110 when it was released but has gone up to over £160 in many shops and will probably increase in price even more now. It isn't clear whether it is Irish distillers ramping the price up or the whiskey shops or a bit of both. |

My copy arrived yesterday in Canada from Jim in UK. His World Whisky choice for 2018 is not available here in Ontario as the variety of American whiskies is still relatively limited at the LCBO though it is gradually getting better at stocking more offerings. _________________ "Always carry a large flagon of whisky in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake."

Hope all is well your side of the water, I noticed you haven't been around much. Cheers. |

Whisky Bibles have made it to customers as far afield as Canada and Australia.
As to me, I live just half-an-hour from Jim's offices.
But mine are nowhere to be seen. Looks like they may have been 'half-inched' lol. |

Hi James. Things have been quite busy for me lately but hope to be more active on the site.
Cheers. _________________ "Always carry a large flagon of whisky in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake."

Respectfully I would say that you need to be very cautious with some of Jims selections and his scoring on some whiskies is bizarre to say the least, its just a personal view.
I remember in 2008 he scored Ardbeg 10 a whopping 97 points yet a dram he stated "miss this and your life will be incomplete" only 95 points?
That was the 1981 20 year Talisker by the way.
This is one I absolutely disagreed with the Linllithgow 1973 30 year OB
I have had it a number of times and scored it in the 90`s being lovely in my view
JM states -
70 points - Nose 18, taste18,finish16, balance 18
He goes onto say- A brave but ultimately futile effort from a malt that is way past its sell by date.
I am not saying I am right and he is wrong but 9 of the Malt Maniacs scored it an average of 91 points (90-93).
All I am saying is that if you only use him as a yardstick you could end up being disappointed?
This is not me bashing JM who has done a lot to promote whisky for sure, it is me just urging a note of caution after having some personal experiences of Jim Murray being a little left field on his tasting notes _________________ Pour me a glass please. |
