(This might've been addressed here before so apologies in advance if that's the case, I'm relatively new to the community)

I am interested in experimenting with ageing scotch and have been testing certain things before in small barrels (2-3L). Purchasing new make spirit is rather expensive though and it's impossible to buy it in bulk.

There are also issues with knowing which distillery it came from (for example: https://www.masterofmalt.com/spirit/new-make-malt-spirit). I can think of a few reasons for both the retailer and the distillery to hide this fact, but as a consumer, I find it rather unpalatable (pun unintended).

So instead of speculating, but also because I have spent a considerable amount of time with limited success, I thought I'd ask here:
a) Is anyone here with the knowledge and ability to elaborate on the specifics of why this product lacks in this market (is it just low demand? etc)
b) Are there any distilleries that are an exception to this and can provide larger quantities of unaged spirit (5L upwards)?

Thank you in advance and have a happy 2018.

Cos.

In my experience maturing your own new make spirit in a small cask is very expensive and the result is not worth the expense. The new make, if you can get hold of it, is expensive and the angels are very greedy with these small casks and I found I had to top the cask up a lot. The result in the end was nothing special.

Thank you for your response. Yes, when I did it before I always lost quite a bit to the angels - this would probably only be fruitful when done in larger quantities really, which means and even more expensive process so rather off-putting. I'll stick to tasting already aged ones for now Smile
