|
|
One bottle with box for sale, in excellent condition (see photos), with excellent fill level. I bought this personally fron the distillery when on holiday on Islay.
1976 vintage Laphroaig bottled by the distillery. This bottled around the turn of the millennium around 1996 I believe, and thus over 20 years old, this bottling received an impressive average of 92 points from 12 of the Malt Maniacs I understand.
This is one of the earliest vintages bottled by Laphroaig. I understand from discussion on other sites that these casks were bought back from private owners.
Ruben Luyten gave it 93/100 and his tasting notes are worth a read
https://www.whiskynotes.be/2013/laphroaig/laphroaig-1976/
Another review suggested that this is a properly unforgettable expression of Islay whisky with "heathery sweetness", "delicate floral notes" and a "good helping of sea breeze"
This is rare, and I am in no rush to sell, as I expect it to only increase in value. I have seen a tatty bottle of this retailing for £3000 and a one in almost as good condition as mine retailing for £3450. The fill level of mine is still high, higher than any other I have seen. I have not seen a finer example of this bottling.
Dont let this one get away, you may never have the chance to own as fine a bottle of Laphroaig again in this condition. There are rumoured to be very few of this fine dram remaining.
Im considering waiting until this is worth at least £5k per bottle before selling, however please contact me to tempt me with offers |

| The most recent bottles auctioned at the whisky auctioneer and SWA both went for £1350 + commission ,so way short of the retail price, I would hold on to it |

| Unfortunaty whats priced on whiskybarrel etc do not represent true value. Auctions are a far better gauge of a bottles true value. |

Depends on rarity - if someone just wants any bottle, they can go buy a nice bottle at auction - someone who pays retail wants THAT bottle at THAT time.
Both are realistic values, they are just selling to different customers.
Often the shops snap up the bottles at auction and then resell to the retail customers
There are plenty of buyers to whom convenience means more than cost, and to them the retail mark up is worth paying, or those shops would never turn a profit
You cant guarantee when the next bottle of a rare whisky will come up at auction, or even how many yet remain out of the grasp of serious collectors from which you would have to prise it from their cold dead hands to get hold of it
Selling at auction is just a way of giving away a lot of the value of a bottle to the shops in the main by buyers who need to sell.
The secret is to realise for the right bottle it is a seller's market - and auctions are buyers' markets because it isnt in the interest of the auction house to allow high reserves, they want churn and transaction fees and commisisons.
Patience you must have, for true value to be unlocked, as Yoda might say |

| The prices of a whisky in whisky shops and the prices at auction or in a private sale are two very different things. You will find the price is often half the price at auction or in a private sale than you will pay in some whisky shops. There is occasionally bottles that fetch close to the shop price but there are not many that do this. |

| This is not a Macallan and would reach 5k in a short time ,this bottle will take years before its worth 3k Most people who are interested in this bottle will be buying it for an investment, and not to drink and buying at retail prices and not auction prices is a bad investment, I would imagine the whisky barrel and The Whisky Exchange will be sitting on these bottles for a long time |

Different people will have different tastes, desires and requirements.
It is a simple fact that there are people who pay retail and there are people who buy in auctions, I wish everyone the best with their collecting and buying.
With a little patience I will receive an offer that is acceptable to me and the eventual buyer |

The problem is if you want higher prices namely more in line with retail then you are wasting your time coming on a site like this advertising your bottle. People on this site and others like it are generally hardcore whiskyfans who want to taste whisky and pay a reasonable price for it. The people who are willing to pay retail prices and in truth prices far in excess of what the whisky is really worth generally do not inhabit forums like this.
Why don`t you just ask TWE to buy if from you and then see how much they are willing to pay then you can gauge that against current auction prices etc
Auction prices are the only indication of true value of a whisky bottle, retail prices are a different thing altogether , there is little point in trying to tell people it is worth £3000+ when respectfully it clearly is not to people in the know, hence why the last bottle sold on the biggest and most well known auction site in the country for £1350.
As a side issue if the £3450 price refers to the bottle The Whisky Vault have,be advised (if you don't already know) they are generally derided by the whisky community for their outrageous prices.
The price range for this at SWA in the last 5 years has been between £800-£1450 perhaps it might reach £3000 private but you may have to sit on it for at least another 7 years possibly 10????
It has sold a little higher in Europe equivalent to almost £1650 but you would have a 17.5% fee roughly on top of that. _________________ Pour me a glass please.

I've seen pristine condition bottles (this is obviously blemished on the box quite a bit) go for £1,400
If you are offered between £1600 and £2000, take it. |
