Quick one for people I dont know if this has been asked before so apologies if it has..

What are the perceptions of people selling empty bottles and boxes on ebay? I have seen some phenominal prices going for empty bottles, granted when full the prices will have been even more phenominal. I was personally after an empty box as I bought a bottle at auction without box.

Would it be far fetched to say I have a slight suspicion of people commiting insurance fraud by buying empty bottles to in the future claim for by saying they smashed the bottle?

Empty bottles and boxes end up being bought to be filled with lesser quality whisky, resealed, and then the fakes are sold on as the genuine thing at much higher prices. It's a nasty business and personally I'd have no part in it, even as an innocent buyer simply wanting a box. It encourages more selling of empty boxes.

There will be some innocent buyers and sellers of empty bottles and boxes but I am of the belief most buyers of empty bottles will be fakers as I see no reason for anyone to want an empty bottle. It would be great to see the likes of ebay banning the sale of empty whisky bottles.

If I finish a bottle of desirable Whisky I ruin the label with a black magic marker before throwing in the bin.

I believe this topic has appeared in the past and the replies likely similar. Empty bottles that I know folks have used in a unique and interesting way are in the fashioning of lamps from a rare bottle as a conversation piece. I have a few very rare empties myself that I was given after major tastings that I have at home simply as a conversation piece (and the artwork of the bottle and case) as well for my own enjoyment. However, fake whisky selling and the crooks behind it are a problem at the international level and the issue should be scrutinized carefully. It puts a major stain on the whisky industry in general.

As someone who like to make a few quid I pondered whether I could essentially sell old to buy new. Perfectly legal and seems to make sense.

But I’d be contributing to what you have set out above. I’d also encourage people to stay away from getting involved, however well intentioned you may be.

I’m sitting with seven empty bottles and was hoping to find someone who turns them into candles or lamps or whatever. They might just end up in the recycling though I do like the glenlivet 21 bottle it’s wooden box.

Having attended Christmas markets etc, there are a lot of people converting empty bottles to lamps, candles, etc. But I am sure there are some 're-fillers' out there.

I was looking for a few boxes/tubes as I managed to get deals on bottles but they didn’t come with the boxes or tubes
I drink and collect whisky I have never sold any and won’t. I like the whole
Idea behind whisky and hope to pass what I collect to my kids if they are interested

Also any empty bottles I have I do as some have mentioned and turn them into candles or lights it’s a shame That people refill bottles and sell on as it means a lot of people destroy boxes and bottles so people can’t make money out of them where’s some people like myself just want to recycle these into useful or just items for show
